Subject: Just got back from the dyno - 4.7
IP: Logged

Message:
I just got back from Dyno Day at the grand opening of Thunder Racing here in Baton Rouge. Here are my results:

Run 1: Max HP=191.1/Max Torque=253.5
Run 2: Max HP=187.7/Max Torque=252.2

Here are my truck specs:

2002 QC 4.7 auto 4x2
4.10 LSD
HO cams
360 AirIntakez
Magnaflow Muffler
no clutch fan

They wouldn't run the dyno in 3rd gear because I have the stock Goodyear LS tires, which don't have a high enough speed rating. So they ran it in 2nd. I was told that I would've gained about 8 HP had they run it in 3rd gear.

So, if I go with 199 max RWHP and 261 max RWTQ, that works out to about 249 HP and 326 ft-lbs at the crank. Not too bad, but I was hoping for more.

So, are the results typical? What can I do to really start seeing some gaines (besides a supercharger)?

The '79 El Camino with a 502 in front of me ran 305 RWHP and the '89 Mustang with a 302 after me ran a 283 RWHP. Made me look rather silly. Need more power!

You know, after thinking about it, I'm quite confused about the 2nd-3rd gear issue. Seems to me that in 2nd, I should see more torque because of the gearing.

Can someone enlighten me?

ps. i did a 2nd gear pull and only got 197hp from it so you need to go in third. and i know that 3rd will rap out to redline at 95mph, so that is well within range of the tires.

midnightmagic is right, thats BS. I had mine dyno'd in drive with O/D off, no problems. Check out my dyno run at:
http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/v8/3893.html

You had to get up to about 2500rpm and then roll into the gas pedal to keep it from down shifting.

A 4.7L with a K&N, TB Spacer and Magnaflow exhaust will pull 222rwhp and 325ft-lbs of torque? So what would a 4.7L with H.O. Cams, Cold Air Intake, duals, Stage 2 Jet pull? Wow...

Just recently they have been advertising dyno runs on TV here, 3 runs for $75 is that a fair price? I think it is the first dyno in town that you can actually go to and run on. I can't wait to go check it out and see what my 1999 5.2L Auto CC 4X4 will do with the minimal mods that I have done.

midnight,

have you dynoes w/o the spacer, and cat back?

You may have had a few more HP, even so, it's always a subject here, most all dynoing a TBspacer, or cat back, say they didn't do anything for HP/TQ.

Would you perhaps have a before dyno?

I don't want to get in a major argument when I don't have all the facts BUT! There is no way to make 325 rear wheel TQ with those mods. I believe what is happening is dyno shops are starting to tell people what the likely horsepower is at the crank using a simple formula. They do this for 2 reasons. 1. Alot of people don't understand that the advertised HP for their vehicles is not what it puts to the rear wheels. 2. The higher the number the more satisfied the customer is and the better the chance they will continue to mod their vehicle and want to dyno again. If you don't believe me go to www.dodgetruckworld.com and see the post where Flex states that he has a 4.7 that is 270HP. That is what the dyno guy told him and he had no reason to question him. If you look at what midnight posts his speed limiter cut out at 4200rpm. The 4.7 makes top HP at 4400rpm so if you use the formula a 230plus+ hp engine would make about 222hp at the crank at 4200rpm. The TQ tops out at 3200rpm so you would aready be able to see max TQ. My opinion is that this truck is making about 235-245fwhp at the crank and 325TQ at the crank but only 190-195rwhp and 260rwtq. I could very well be wrong but I have looked at hundreds of dynos for the 4.7l and have yet to see anything higher than 308rwtq NA and that was on a heavily modded engine. Hemi's can't even put out that much rwtq. I beleive that I am the one that sold that TB to Midnight and I want it back if those are rwhp #'s (just kidding). I am really not trying to flame, I'm just trying to make sense out of the #'s. I am always happy to see people get good dyno numbers and use that info for my own mods. Which are: KRC206 cams, ASP underdrive pulleys, HO intake, F&B 70mm TB, Homebrew intake,180 stat, IAT relocate. I am guessing that my #'s would be 215rwhp/290rwtq because I have an Auto trans and I really have no dyno comparisons to see what the pullies do, I can only guess.
Keep modding............. Tom J.

I figured you would be close. What were your #'s? We have similar mods, so I would be curious to see how well your truck does. The only dyno within 300 miles of where I live costs $150.00 and from the dyno sheets I have seen they are not accurate. I watched them dyno a 77 dodge with a 400cu. engine in it. It seemed to run well and only got 80rwhp and 150rwtq. It's a mustang dyno and brand new. I don't think they are using it right and I am not about to spend $150.00 on a dyno if I can't trust the #'s.
Keep modding............ Tom J.

My mods are what you see listed plus the following...

Long tube headers, ported heads, 1.92" intake and 1.60" exhaust valves, and lastly, everything and anything having to do with air in or out port matched. Depending on the temp, my RWHP was 255-260 and TQ was in the 320-330 RWTQ range, but that was before I had my heads ported/polished/matched and before the larger valves installed. I am in desperate need of an ECU flash and larger injectors (or an entire stand alone system). The IAT adjuster is totally at it's limits...(never that much play in it to begin with). Now, I'd say I'm in the 270+ RWHP range and easily 350+ RWTQ. Good thing I had the valvebody in my tranny modded last year (already have tranny & oil cooler), b/c I think I need a built 45RFE before I do anything else...

And I wanted to add a NX 100 shot in there for good measure, but I'm waiting on that one.

I plan on adding the KRC 206 cams (the whole spring/retainer deal) and adding some larger injectors and getting the KB Optimizer II customized and installed for my truck early next year (might get the KB Optimizer II real soon!)...

Oh yeah...I'm switching to 3.92 gearing in the rear by early next year as well, and getting rid of the stock LSD and replacing it with something stronger. I think my stock LSD is almost totally shot right now :(

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You need to update your sig. I've got a couple more questions for you. Tell me about these heads...How much did they cost? Are these the KRC performance heads? and I am really looking for some long tube headers, where did you get yours? I am really impressed with your setup and I hope to have something similar before I go for the SuperCharger.

Demon, who modded your 45rfe valve body? And how much persuasion did it take? Transgo is full of crap I think, if they say they're gonna make kits for this tranny...how drastic a modification was it, similar to the martin saine VB's on the 360's?
