Hey all Got a question
I have a 96 Dak w/ a 5.2 @ 120k
My oil pressure keep jumping around it's usually sitting in the middle or a bit higher on the guage.
Now it's starting to drop around 1500 RPM's
and it's really high around 3000 RPM's
it's never dropped or gone higher than the "middle zone" on the guage.
(my guage has a zero line, middle zone, max line)
I just changed my oil & filter aprox. 1500 miles ago so I don't think in the filter.
I use fully sinthetic oil 10/30
I think it maybe some crap floating in the pan that keeps clogging up the pump or screen
what's you input guys, I don't want to tear it apart and have it be something else that's eaiser to get to.
thanks,

Try replacing the oil pressure sending unit, this is the fix most of the time. BTW if you had crap floating in the pan it would drain out with your oil change.

Well it's not the sending unit
guess it's the pump, unless someone has any other ideas

Check your oil pressure with a mechanical gauge, maybe borrow one ? could buy a cheepo. Zip tie it to your wiper arm at the cowl and see what you get for pressure. The factory gauge is electrical and could be a problem. If a mechanical gauge shows a problem, then you may have to go inside.

Had the same prob with my R/T. It turned out to be a junk oil filter.

Dude it's probably in the stinking gauge cluster itself. I;m not certain if it would be the gauge or the printed circut board that drives it. The gauge itself is just a simple volt meter that recives a voltage signal from the printed circut board it hookes into. I would probably guess it's the gauge but you could probably find out for sure if you hooked up a dvom to the pins in the circut board and see if the voltage fluctuates.

Turned out the filter was defective. I replaced it with the same kind of filter and it fixed the problem. Its worth a shot.

chris ... on my 97, the wires to the oil pressure sensor comes off a large wiring harness running across the firewall and below the sensor. It is quite heavy and puts quite a strain on the wires at the sensor's connector. I raised the huge harness up and tied it to hold it up relieving its weight on the connector. It did help.

good topic. I have been wondering what is normal for the guage? I have a 99 with the 318. Under acceleration and cold starts it is about halfway between 40 and max. What are the normal limits I should see on the needle?

TIA,
Wal
