I recently checked my mileage and got 15½ mpg, but I only have about 1,100 miles on my new '03 Dakota with 5 speed automatic.

Sticker mileage estimates are typically high for all makes and models, my RC 4x4 4.7 auto gets 15.

I have the same truck but with a stick, and i get 16.8 around down and like 17.5 on the highway. its an 03 with 3500 miles. When i go to maine on their long back roads i have gotten 20mpg ( I love the over head info center) It all depends on where you drive and how you drive it. I recently got a tonneau cover for my truck, once i install it i will let you know how much it helps

Same thing here Perry, I have a '03 4x4 v8 4.7L 5speed auto with a Flowmaster exhaust. Before the 4k when the dealer said the gasmilage would get better I was getting 12.9mpg. Since I took it on my trip to Kentucky I've been getting 14.4mpg, I don't see it getting any better now. Car and Driver says the main problem with the Dakotas is their crappy gas milage, but I love my truck so I'll deal with it.

I have an 2003 Ram with the 4.7 5-speed manual 3.92LS rear 4x4. I get app. 14.5 around town/ short trip driving and 19-21 on the highway. I have a flush tonneau but it didn't help fuel mileage. I have a true cold-air intake and straight-thru muffler with factory pipe. This combo helped mileage and power as well as sound. I also have the HO cams, but haven't seem any difference yet. They've only been installed for a week. Around town mileage is the same, don't know for a trip yet. I am going on a 300 mile trip Monday, and I will post my results if anyone is interested. I also removed clutch fan and installed electric fan on thermal switch. This helps mileage more than any other mod I've ever seen. Also, use Mobil 1 but that doesn't seem to matter on fuel mileage.

Hey Troy...as I understand it, from the factory the 4.7 comes with a clutch fan and an electric fan, when you say you installed an electric fan on a thermal switch did you remove the stock electric fan as well as the clutch fan and re-install an upgrade in its place?

Another way to improve MPG is to change ALL of the fluids to synthetic.

After changing my tranny, xfercase and both differentials to Redline synthetic, I averaged about 2MPG better than previous.

BONUS: The redline "MTL" (Manual Transmission Lubricant) improves the shifting 'feel' ... especially in VERY cold whether and when the tranny is hot. (after highway driving at 98F outside)
