Yes, you should get a K&N to replace your stock filter or get a custom intake for better mpg and hp. We make them and sell them on ebay. Some people on this site bash our efforts to sell but we just want to give an alternative choice for those who don't want to make their own or who want to use our pictures to assist in making their own. Many people make their own so who knows who originally came up with the idea. We get our parts from Home Depot. THe tubing parts alone are about $30 and the filter is about $40 (from Martel Bros or Summit Racing). Some people are either underestimating how much the parts really cost or they have a cheaper source for parts. People email us all the time and we offer help if they want to make their own. We are not trying to rip anyone off. When you go to our ebay auctions and store, the "Buy it Now" price is over $100. This is for people who want the auction to end immediately and want the intake to ship right away. If you look closer at our auctions, the beginning bid price is $89.80 plus $11 shipping. We usually only receive one bid on each intake if any. We don't make alot of money on each intake. Time to get off my soapbox. : )

Don't get just the filter, you need the complete cold air intake. It is probably one of the most important mods to your truck.

I noticed quite a gain with mine, immediate top end, lots more zip. It was the first mod that I did.
Here is a quick sketch on how to put together one like it. It's polished stainless steel. The only complaint I have about mine is that it is fairly short, I'm going to try to modify it this spring.

I have the Airaid system for a 2002 4.7 liter. They boast a 11 hp increase. I can't vouch for that but you sure can tell the difference. It sounds like a huge 4 bbl when you floor it. I got mine at www.shop.sporttruck.com

How do these "cold air" intakes that bring in the hot air surrounding the engine within the engine compartment work better than the stock intake I have that has a feed horn going to the area behind the headlight to pull in the cooler outside air? I am thoroughly confused!

The intake from http://www.intenseperformance.com/products/Stage/stage.html (Z-Tube with 7" Stage III cold air)seems to be the correct answer. I just wish it was CARB approved for my loaction.

I agree with you. That is why I would like to extend mine so that it draws in the cold air from beside the rad.

The CAI that don't use a heat sheild work better only because the volume of air increases. IN the hot summer days sitting in traffic, you can really notice a power loss though. But once you are moving and if you removed the rubber piece from beside the radiator it doesn't suck in that much hot air.

That was a great quote.... actually anything from the Simpson's is great, especially the Wiggum family:
