Every so often, I hear a rather loud hum almost, a low horn sounding noise emitting from under the hood. The sound is intermittent and will stop when shutting down and restarting. At first I thought it was the electric fan but it seems to be originating from the right side of the top hat (looking at it from the front) back towards the firewall. There is I guess, are a couple of vacuum lines with an EVAP service port and what looks like a solenoid or diaphragm. That solenoid or diaphragm gives off a vibration, which further leads me to believe that this is where the sound is originating. Any ideas? Anyone else experiencing this. And yes, I did a search, some 30 pages worth.

Anybody that could shed some light on this would be appreciated.

I heard the same sound (dont' know if this'll be your problem or not) and I looked around the evap lines and come to find out one of the vacuum lines was weak and soft so when it was sucking it would squeeze the hose shut and it made a vibration that sounded like a horn.

Check that out...on mine the evap lines come out around the fuse box on the drivers side under the hood and runs above the drivers side header. Mine's an '01 so the purge solenoid is behind the battery instead of on the firewall so your evap lines may be in a different place.

Mainly look for a hose thats kinked.

Is it only when you first crank it? I hear similar noise for about first 30-40 seconds and thought it was the fan also. If I ever get the service dept at local dealer to call me back I'll let you know.

StrangeBrew,
I suffer through the same humming noise, especially at idle. Often, I can get it to stop by tapping the gas pedal.
The noise is coming from your "Purge Valve Solenoid". The next time you hear it, get out and feel the solenoid, it'll be vibrating like crazy.
I'm not sure if this is normal, I doubt it is.
Looks like it would be easy to replace.
