Subject: 94 318 dies usually cold

I have 1994 318, auto, about a month ago the fuel pump took a dump right at the gas station after it was filled to the rim(common). About a week after it was replaced, it started cutting out at speed, especially on a pull. This usually only happens shortly after you take off driving approx. within 15 minutes, then it may not happen again for 40 miles if it happens. It has never left me and I dont believe that it dies completely but it bucks, loses power and even backfired a couple of times. This goes on for about 5 seconds and then it smooths out and goes on down the road fine. I replaced the cap and rotor. But the tuneup only has about 10k on it I just checked it and it didnt look real good so I replaced them. Did not help, just now I drove it about 4 miles and it started doing it almost 2 miles into the ride on a pretty good grade uphill. Just now got a check engine light but I am not confident that this code will not show the correct problem, it will probably read an 02 sensor since it was running so bad. Any suggestions?????? Thanks

haha my fuel pump did that same thing years ago. Luckilly it was under warranty. I ran it really low which is bad for the fuel pump and then feeling guilty, I filled it up. It died a couple miles later the next time I tried to start it. That was the only time It was ever on a tow truck and it has almost 113k miles. Not too bad for a domestic from one of the "big three". I would say check your engine code, its simple. I"m sure its explained many times on this site if you do a search. At first glance, it sounds like an ignition problem to me. The first thing I'd do is check the plugs. That can be a good indication. Did you change them with the cap/rotor? When my plugs are at the end of their life it starts a bit hard and idles a little rough until it warms up. Once its warm, and if it were only the plugs, it should run fine. If I had to guess one part I'd say ignition module but thats unfortunately part of your computer so try the simple first. Did you change your fuel filter with the new pump? If you didn't, its very very important that you do. Its located under and inside the drivers side frame rail right behind the cab and is very easy to do. Sorry for the long post, I was just typing some thoughts as they pop into my head. Do a little tinkering and then let me know what you find.

Thanks for the reply, I had the filter that is in the tank with the pump replaced, but I have been unable to locate another on the vehicle, I have looked everywhere and some local mechanics told me that the one in the tank was the only one on the 94's. And by the way this it starts perfect everytime with no rough idle, the starter barely even makes a noise and then its runnin. But this could be an unusual problem or the truck could be reacting different to bad plugs as opposed to your truck. Any more suggestions?????? thanks

a non accessible fuel filter? thats rediculous. I'm not saying its incorrect though. I'm glad I got the '93 version. I also dont have that stupid third brake light. haha

The rough idle and hard starts is just what I experience with worn plug, not fouled plugs. It, aalong with the fuel filter, may not be your ultimate problem but that couldnt hurt to try. They are things that should be done anyway. Try loooking where I said inside the driver's side frame. I doubt the mechanics would have missed this though but you never know. It could possibly be a bad fuel pump or ignition module. This is a good excuse to get yourself a Moper performance sbec. hehe. It may not fix the problem if it is a bum fuel pump but you'll get some more ponies. It will also weed out the possibility of it being your computer.

No fuel filter in frame rail. I have checked myself numerous times. I find it hard to believe that the brand new fuel pump is bad but it could happen. the problem is, I believe getting progressively worse, I drove today and barely got back home. Although If I stick it in neutral while this is occurring, it will rev up fine and then you stick it in gear and back to the sputtering, then it cleared up. Although today it seemed worse than it has been in the past and the check engine light went out. Thanks forthe help.

Ok then thats not the fuel pump. The fuel pump keeps pressure in the fuel lines. It works the same whether its in drive or neutral. Ever considering getting an MPSBEC? They are around $260 and then you get $100 of that back when you send them your old unit. I assume thats cheaper than buying a new stock unit from a dealership.

Yes thats the computer, you can get one from jeg's or summit I believe. I'm not saying that it will most definitely fix the problem but you will get more ponies and its a possibility that it will fix it.
