 Subject: Question about changing my air system

I have a 2003 dakota, 4.7 5 speed std. When I look at the sguare air hat that is connected to the TB I see there is some sort of sensor on the driver side of it. There are two on the trottle body but this one is on the plastic part of the hat. Would anyone know what this regulates and could I do away with it when I change to a K&n cone filter with home made connector pipe.
I asked the dealership and it dosen't show what it is in their manual, the mechanic said it might control as in shut off or allow more air passage to the TB. I guess the best way is to take it off and see what it is connected to inside the hat, anyone have any ideas

I am facing the same situation. I have a AirForce one filter, and it says to take that box off. Like you said there is a connector on that square box.
I was a little hesitant about just taking it off, not knowing what it does. I haven't spend too much time on it. Apparently if you get the K+N fipk kit, you dont need to take that square box off. What is the proper name for that "square box" anyways.
I am trying to figure out a way to route cold air to the filter. I read a post on another forum about using dryer ducting.
I am going to do some searching online today, will let you know what I find.

The square box is the intake baffle. That is, if your talking about the one mounted directly to the tb with "Dodge 4.7" or something like that printed on it. If you look inside the box you will see different chambers, etc. This box helps to isolate some of the noises that the engine makes when sucking air through the tb. The sensor is the IAT (intake air temperature) sensor. You must have this. If you unhook it you will get a check engine light. It is very delicate, so be careful. Also, it must have filtered air going across it. If not filtered, dirt and debris will destroy it very quickly. The sensor is here on later models. The earlier models had them in a different place and everyone was moving them to the air tube to get a cooler charge. It was a good idea for Dodge to put them in there current location, but it can make it difficult to install certain intakes. I made a true cold air system and left the baffle in its orginal location. No excessive noise and true cold air performance. I am very pleased with it.

Thanks to a user from another site, I have some information.
That air hat is a resignator box, it acts as a muffler, quieting the airflow. Which is why a new intake will get better performance.
That sensor is an air temperature sensor, which is vital to engine operation. Apparently it is plug and play so you can get a new sensor, but you'll have to drill into your new intake. I am not so sure I'd want to do this.
