hello all,
I just have a question for you guys on this great site.
first off this is what my dak is: a 97 dakota, ext. cab, 4x4, with the 5.2L, and automatic transmission.

this is my problem: when i accelerate at full throttle the trans will act like it just shifts into nutreul. then once i let off the gas and it revs down a little it shifts back into gear. there is no clunking or anything, and it only does it at or very near to full throttle acceleration. what could this be?

thanks
josh

First thing you'll wanna check is your tranny fluid.... Leave the truck running for 5-10 minutes (driving it preferably) then pull over and check using the dipstick while the vehicle is still running.

The fluid could be low, causing the torque converter to slip when you put alota torque to it. I'd also check the fluid for burning clutch packs, to do this just smell the fluid I find if you rub it between your fingers some the smell becomes more obvious. If it smells like there is ANY burning in the fluid then your clutchpacks are at least a bit gone.

If the previous owner (or you) have the truck always shifting smooth it'll wear out the clutch packs faster. This is because to have a smooth shift the clutch packs must slip which wears them and creates alot of heat. The rules for shifting and keeping the tranny in top condition is: shift fast in an auto, and shift slow in a manual (reasonably).

Hope this helps,

Pat - Ex nihilo nihilus

are the clutch packs like the clutch plates?

josh

You can try adjusting the TV Cable but only move it 1-4 clicks at most. It's very sensitive. Good luck. Any other ?'s do a search for TV Cable adjustment.

Sounds like you are low on tranny fluid or your tranny filter is dirty and needs replacing.
hope this helps.
