OK i have searched the forum for info and still havent really got my answer. So, Can anyone tell me why i shouldnt get 4.10 gears for my 4.7l dakota quad cab. I feel they are a necessety since i need to pull my boat up a 8% incline every weekend and the 3.55's just arent going to cut it. I also could care less if i get worst gas mileage, this is a dakota not a dumb geo.

you could just get the 3.92's that dakotas also come with. sorry i have no real advice, but the 4.10's would be fine. my old truck came with them, but it had a v6. i couldn't imagine a v8 with them, that would be nice. plus, lots of offroaders get 4.56's or even 4.88's, so i can't see 4.10 having any bad side effects. i mean you don't want to be revving at 3k rpm doing 55mph, but i doubt it would do that with only 4.10's.

Jeremy,

How heavy is the boat? I tow a travel trailer, 24' that has a dry weight of 3800lbs, I am most likely breaking the 4000 mark with it loaded up for trips. I have a 2000 Quad Cab 5spd Manual 4x4 with 3.55s and I have never had a problem, it pulls VERY easily and smooth.

Anyway, if you are going any higher, I would say just go 3.92s, I really would not think you would need to go as far as 4.10s.

The boat is about 3k with all 40 gal of fue and a bunch of gear. I have an automatic so if you have an 5 speed then you have an obvious advantage over me. Believe me i have plenty of power i just think the torque range on the auto is lousy so i get some serious spark knock and all the premium fuels in the world wont help this considering the 100 degree plus heat and the 8% incline thats a llong ways. The only thing i can do right now is drop the dumb thing into 2nd gear and can only do about 40 mph before it starts to knock. I dont mind the 40 mph but i cant stand dropping it to second while the motor revs out like its going to blow.

Yeah just get the 4.10's. There's alot of guys already running them and a couple of guys running 4.56's. I've got 3.92's with a LSD on a 2wd. I can pull a 20ft Aquasport center console no prob at 60 mph and still get 14mpg. This is in flat S. Florida. If you have an open dif. you may want to look into an LSD or powertrax locker. You can get the gears and locker from V8performance.com for a pretty good price.

You've got a pretty heavy truck...4.10 gears are just gonna make your truck more driveable.

Thats sort of what i thought and cosidering my climb to the resiviour i didnt really want to go with the 3.92, that and the fact that it will probably get lifted 3" and go up a tire size anyway.

Fear the 4.56s. A lot of fun around town and passing on the highway, but top speed is hurt. I am running like 3600 RPM at 90 MPH in 5th gear with 4.56s and 25.6" tall tires.

If you are using the truck as a daily driver and towing your boat I would say no higher than 3.92s.

If you like hot rodding around or drag racing, go 4.10s and higher.

For a Quad Cab 4x4, I would not think you would be drag racing with it, stick with 3.92s at the highest.

I have 3.55s and have no problem towing with it. If I felt the need, I would go to 3.92s.

Already having all sorts of fun with it and I have only just broke 600 miles.

Jeremy, if your going to lift the truck and up the tire size in the future you might as well go with the 4.56 now, beleive me you'll be thankful later. I got the 4.56 and I'm running 33's and at 60mph I'm at about 2200-2300 RPMS with an auto trans. so the revs are not that high.
Good luck with your choice. jimbo

P.S. I got a 2002 4x4 4.7 CC.

Thank you Jimbo for one of the only helpful replies in this thread since it started. It seams as if people think that i intend to use it for drag racing but if they had just read the original post they would have seen that i use this as a daily driver and have to every weekend pull a boat up an 8% grade and will potentially be lifting it and putting about 2 tire sizes + on it. Dont know if any of you have these grades in your area but until you have tried to pull over 3000 lbs up a grade like that dont try to convince me to stay with those week ass 3.55's cause i am already living proof that they suck ass on the hills with a boat attached.

Jeremy check out this web site. Go to www.intercotire.com Then go to technical info and then calculators and tables. Once you are there go to gear change. This will help you find out different RPM's for different tire and gear changes. I found this very helpful for when i was deciding to swap out for 3.92's or 4.10.

First gear 3.00
second gear 1.67 up shift/1.5 downshift
third gear-or O/D off 1.00
forth gear .75
fifth gear .67

Transfer Case is 1.00

3.92 and 4.11 are very close and both will help alot with towing your boat. I went with the 3.92 because i was staying with my stock 265/70/R16 tires. I have an automatic. Well, obvious from the gear ratios i listed above. Torque was greatly improved.

How fast will you moving up the 8% incline? If you are towing then you must have the O/D off. If you put on 33" tires and went with the 4.56's you will be turning 2800 RPM's at 60 mph. With the 4.11's, 2500 rpm and 2400 rpm with the 3.92's

Jeremy, I'll be going up a pretty long up hill grade this Sun. Not sure what the grade of the hill is but it starts out pretty low and the grade starts to steepen, it's a few miles long so as it gets steeper I'll turn of the o/d and see what the rpm's are and what the power is like and I'll let you know. If I get home early enough I'll post it Sun. if not by Mon. at the latest.

Thanks jimbo, As I plan to have all the gears changed out in the pickup in January so i still have some time to figure it all out. I usually get a nice sized profit sharing check in January and 500 bucks for christmas bonus so hope fully all that will happen again for the 8th year in a row. When i get my gears dumped i plan to put a post on this sight for anyone who would want them CHEAP and I'm talking Cost of shipping to buyers town and maybe 50 bucks to put in my pocket so hopefully someone will see the post that could really use these gears. Once again thanks for all of your help and will be looking forward to future posts. PS how much lift is under your truck to fit the 33's and are they on stock rims. the reason i ask is because i doubt i will ever buy new rims for this truck so i am going to be running the factory 16x8's and dont want to lift 6"'s just to run 33's. More than likely it will be INTERCO TIRE's STS's

Jeremy your welcome, thats what this form is supposed to be for, to help each other with our trucks, even if some people like to dog on people insted. Anyway I have to tell you I do have a 6.5in. lift on my truck with 33x12.5 Swampers SSR's on 10x15in. Welds. I did'nt have to do any trimming though. I'm sure you can fit the 33's with less of a lift, alot of guys on this site have done it, but you will have to trim some from your front wheel well area. Below is a link of a pic. of my truck if you would like to see it, it's not too high with the 6in., but high enough.

Jeremy, I took my truck up that long hill. My rpm's at 50mph was about 2500 and at 55mph was about 2700-2800, now due to the bigger tires the speed is off by about 2-4mph, this was in 3rd gear. OK power wise, at the steepest part of the hill now if I was pulling a boat or any type of trailer I don't think I would be satisfied with anything less than 4.56. I know some might say the rpm's are a bit high, but the 4.7 comes into it's power at about 3000rpm's, so I guess it's all a matter of personal prefrence, more power or lower rpm's, for me it was more power hands down. Good luck with your choice, I hope this info. was helpful.

Thanks again jimbo for the info. I am probably going to do the 4.56 gears. one downfall is, i will more than likely be stuck with high rpm's for a while because i know the wife isn't going to let me buy the 33's at the same time, so i guess i will just have to have some fun with my stock 265's and lay down a little rubber. anyways i will more than likely just put some 33' wild country terrain tires on so since i am not going to be able to buy 10" wide wheels for a long time. thanks again.

Not to sound rude but when it gets right down to it, you may as well forget about good milage in a dakota cause there isn't such a thing.
