Hey guys,
Should the "key on three times" trick get the trouble codes from any year dakota? When I do this to my 96 SLT, I get the code 12, any actual trouble codes, then the code 55.

I tried this trick on my girl's '97 5.2 dak, and I got no codes at all from her MIL light. Whats going on?

thanx

robertg

I just went thru the whole enchilada with my 96 slt 5.2 The code 12 just means that you have recently un-hooked your battery. It should stop showing a code 12 after so many starts..I made the mistake of un-doing my battery before i checked the code to see what was wrong with my 96. I found out anyway---Had to replace fuel pump and every thing else in the fuel tank. The truck now seems to run better than it ever has since new...

Failing fuel pumps rarely set a code. If they do, it is either for fuel system lean or multiple-cylinder misfires. Neither code is conclusive to a particular failure.

Also on the 96 dakota there is no in-line fuel filter like on most other models and years. Hey Robert was something wrong with your truck or were you just wondering about the 12 code???

My truck is OK, except every 3rd full moon it'll give me an O2 code 21. Exhaust system/sensors only have 25K on them. I'll reset the computer and it'll go away for 2 months or so.

I was actually wondering why the Key On 3 times trick didn't seem to work on a '97 5.2??

Hey Robert-----The guys out here say Autozone will check your codes for free. I am in California and they have stopped doing it completely here.
