Here's the deal, I have a 400 big block bored .40" over with a radical cam and I have nothing to put it in. I want to put it in a Dakota. I have the 727 tranny, driveshaft, and all mounts and wiring out of the 77 3/4 ton it came out of. Fabrication is no problem and I WILL make it fit if I have to. $$$ shouldn't be a problem either. Please give me your feedback and any help if possible.

Not sure what feedback you want. You have the engine, put it in what you want. I like cars, if it was me, it'd go into an old Camaro maybe. You probably like trucks, by handle, probably Dodges. Dakotas are the best street sport truck you can buy if you're looking for somthing to really tune and have fun working on. Decide if you want off-road or on-road, then get either a 4x4 with a hefty t-case or if ur keepin on the street then definitely get the RT. The RT has better suspension and maybe a better R&P too. Find the model/year body/interior style you like and have at it!

Durango,

You said put it in a Camaro???? I'm new to the Mopar scene but have been a Chevy guy for years. The only big block 400 I know of is a BOP, so forgive me if I'm wrong, but...

MoparGuy77, why a 727 transmission?

If you have the flow, go TH400 and your 400 BB in a GenII, standard cab short bed with the quietest mufflers you can find and a stock hood, put ladders and a 9" under it with some cheater slicks, spray the hell out of it and go win some money!!!

I have a genII and wish I had more cubic inches. On that note, does anyone know if a 94 318 PCM will support 360 injectors? I was thinking of going up to a 360 but am not sure if the computer would freak out! I can compensate for lean or rich conditions with sofware and fuel pressure but I don't want to screw with the harness. Has anybody seen it done before?

either get the kit from schumacher or do it yerself. the oilpan is th 72-up big block truck pan with a modified sump. technically the 4x4 pan.. i believe. you can use the pickup without chopping it. they also have a nice 727 adaptor bracket the has been discontinued from the dealer for years now. motor mounts shouldnt be a big problem. elephant ears would be easy. but also not fun if you want to drive it alot (vibration).
brake booster is also an issue, but with a low block "b" motor you may not have a problem.

Hey Guys, I too am dropping a stroked 400 into a 90 Dakota Mopar Express truck. I have talked to the people @ www.engine-swaps.com and they have answered a bunch of questions for me.
They have a kit with no holes to drill in the frame that gives you the:
Engine mounts
Tranny mounts - TF727
Oil pan and pick up - Milodon (can only get this pan from Schumacher/engine-swaps.com)

Headers - Custom made units only.
Exhaust Manifolds - 62-65 B-Body manifolds work pefectly. I got a pair for 100 bucks.
(Schumacher says he'll sell you a set for $135 = shipping.)

I would love to get email from anyone else who is doing this swap or wants to do it. I will help or hopfully someone can answer my questions too.

jeffaki@bellsouth.net

I think right now my biggest worry is all of the electrical conversions that have to take place.
Also, getting the speedometer correct.
I have a 8 3/4 narrowed rear end but what about a drive shaft. (I think I'm gonna have to get a custom one made)
I think my plate will read:
CAREATR

The 400 mopar was introduced in 71. It was the 383 replacement. It had the same stroke as a 383 but a larger bore. Its bore is actually bigger than a 440. It was built into the late 70s along with 440 and was put into many land yachts and trucks. They were low compression smog dogs and never ment to be a high performance piece. Raise the compression from the dismal 7 to 1 that they came with and add a camshaft, intake, carb, and headers and they become high reving screamers. As for the 727, its the only auto you can use behind a BB Mopar. The SB and BB versions are unique and will not interchange. The bellhousings are different but the internals are basically the same. Hope this helps.

hmmm... i maybe wrong, but i thought i read at Allpar.com that the 400 came out in 1973. I have a 1974 400 that i am building up right now.

yeah, because of the 383 stroke and the 440 journals, you could just toss in a 440 crank, 383 rods and custom pistons (cheap, too) and get a 451BB.

I know that chevy's 400 was a small block, but pontiac may of had a 400 BB as well.

they actually did start with the 400 in 1971, but only in 2 or 3 full size cars so they are very rare before 1973.

Hey intenseDak39, pointiac did make a bb 400 but it only came out in one year. i think.
next, does anyone know if there is a superchager for a 400 dodge? depending on how high compresion that 451 stroker is, it could be even more wicked with forced air induction and NOS. The thought of a teny, tiny dakota with a big ass blower coming out of the top makes me feel all warm inside.

Pontiac had 400s in thier muscle cars from atleast from 67-73'.

Are any of you guys worrying about the front and weight/handling? Driving my truck hard, I think my 318 is alittle too heavy.

If you want to go big why not just get the 4.15" crank and go 30 over for 498ci:) What are you guys going to use for tires, Mickey sportsmans? Hoosier has a nice radial(seen in JEGs catalog) that looks like a cart rain tire, up to 31x18.5x15.

Anyone contemplating a 451 stroker from a 400 should be advised the 440 crank must be turned down. The journals are not the same as the 440, they are the same as the 383. Radius the edge next to the cut and it should be strong enough. Many consider this set up to be stronger than a 440 as the low deck big block will be stiffer.

For the record, JVX carries an adapter that mates Mopar big blocks to A500/A518's, thus resolving the bellhousing issue.

Hi, just a visitor here. Looking over some of the posts/subjects. New to all this, Dakotas. Just bought a used one from friend, '92 Sport 4X4 with 5.2. Considering "playing" and building it. Was wondering if gen1, or anyone else could post on here who "JVX" is, the company that makes the adapter to adapt b/rb block to A500/518 transmission? Thanks

Mopar specialist (for many years). Not much of a web page, but contact email for John Vinson and 1-800 number are listed. There's also a downloadable pdf of all the stuff they carry. John's a personable character. You won't find a better tranny builder...even the newer models/overdrives.

just an FYI, the 400 block came out in 1972. As far as a 451 stroker vs a SBM stroker is that anyone can put a SBM in a dakota, but not many have a BBM under the hood. I will be putting a 451 stroker under the hood of my 89 dakota convert. and I will be tubbing the bed. Its novelty, not practicality! OH and pontiacs was not a BB it was a wide block :)

How could a "chevy man for years" never hear of a BBC 400?

The pontiac 400 was made for far more than 1 year. Firebirds, GPs and T/As used them in the 70s - really great engines. I had a 1970 formula 400 with a ----> (400) in it and it rocked!

MSTRofObvious...

Bless us with your wisdom!

I'm very aware of BBC displacement and am having trouble placeing one of 400ci. 396 and 402 are the closest that I can recall! Again, BOP's were a dime a dozen, but GM's? What did it come in and what was the bore and stroke?

Next thing your going to tell me is that Olds made a 442ci engine... RIGHT!!!
