Sometimes (almost every time actually) when I start my truck it revs way up to about 2500 then down to 500... then up to 2500 and back to 500... it does this about 6 or 7 times then it goes to normal for a while.

When I turn my ac on it does the same thing only worse because now the engine is running faster for the ac... shoots all the way up to about 3400 and down back and forth. But then after 6 or 7 times it goes normal.

This is all in park. It never USED to do it while I was driving.

NOW, while I'm going down the road (sometimes) it seems like it drops from 4th gear to 3rd and back and forth, ESPECIALLY when I have cruise on.

What's the deal? Someone told me it was just how daks are. This can't be good for the tranny?

00' QC 4.7 rubber flap removed, autolites, flow 40's single in dual out the rest is stock

"Someone" does not know what they are talking about. Have it properly diagnosed. A few different failures could cause those symptoms.

Part of your problem (only part) may be in the cruise control. In my 03 QC, if I have the cruise on and I start going downhill (found this out on I-81 in VA), the cruise will shift out of overdrive to keep the truck near the cruise set speed. It will first disengage the transmission (for mpg?) and if the truck accelerates beyond about 2-3 mph from your cruise set speed, it will kick out of overdrive to slow the truck back to the cruise set speed. The first few times it happened, I thought my transmission was malfunctioning. It won't do it with the cruise off (the truck will just accelerate).

The idle stuff is another matter.

I think I read this could be one of a few things. They talk on the Durango board about cleaning your throttle body, IAC, and TPS. Experience with other vehicles has led me to replace the TPS when this happened.

Just some ideas.
