I was just thinking, if Dodge puts the 3.7 V6 in the Dakota, that will make the SXT model even more attractive at it's current price point, because now at 210hp, it will be just 20hp less than the 4.7s and with better gas mileage, to a lot of people the 20hp difference rather than the 60hp difference between the 3.9 and 4.7 wouldn't matter much...kinda would be buying a V8 for a little more tq, sound, and some power.

Wonder if there are plans to bump the 4.7 to the HO status at about 265 or 270hp when introducing the 3.7 to the Dakota lineup???

Just something stupid I was thinking about!

not really sure if the MPG would be any better w/the 3.7L V6. The smaller engine would have to work harder to move essentially the same mass.

That was actually not a bad thought, 47Dak03. I've driven a 3.9 Dakota, and a 3.7 Jeep Liberty. The 3.7 has surprising pep, so it wouldn't be a bad move to put it in the Dakota. I still like my 5.2 V8, though!

i think the 3.7 is rated at 215hp. Thats the reason i think it will never see itself in a dakota... or at least when it does i imagine these would be the only options:

215 hp 3.7 base
260 hp 4.7 HO Sport/SXT/WHATEVER
345 hp 5.7 RT

thats the only way it would make sense.

I haven't seen hp or torque curves for the 3.7 but just because PEAK hp is only 20hp less than the 4.7 doesn't mean the powerband is necessarily as broad or has the torque to back it up.

yeah... but its peak power that sells cars/trucks these days. You dont see a commercial saying... "better overall powerband!"

Lol, Intense. The Jeep Liberty I drove moved surprisingly fast, and the 3.7 had substantially more "oomph" than I expected (for a V6). The 3.9 is basically a 318/360 block with two cylinders chopped off, while the 3.7 is a new design, as far as I know. The Liberty was a rental, and it did mostly stop-and-go city driving, and did it well. The power band doesn't seem to be extremely high up in the rpm range.

In other words, there are no V-8s in the class...peakier power is less noticable in lighter weight vehicles.

3.7L peak tq @4200 peak H.P. @5200. In the Dakota in 2005(maybe sooner). The plant that made the 3.9L has been closed for 6-7 months. 3.7L was inspired by the 4.7L but is not a 4.7L with two cyls chopped off.Much stronger bottom end and counter rotating balance shaft. Will be a pleasant surprize to Dakota owners.Btw fuel mileage will be better than 4.7L also.

That much less torque makes it that much less capable, If your interested in power. Just like, If you putt the 250hp 3.5 V6 in a ram it would be significantly slower than a 318 with only 220hp because of the amount of torque lost.

"...counter rotating balance shaft" ---dcxer about the new 3.7

So, that engine uses the same counterweight technology as those damnable Mitsubishi 4 bangers that were shoved into all the FWD Chryslers in the 1980's???

Have you ever seen some of those "counter weights" they had on the old 4 bangers??? They are chain driven off of the main crank!!! It doesn't make much sense to me for someone to have to engineer a SEPERATE crank throwing vibrations around to counter act the vibrations from their flawed main crankshaft and recpricating assembly. I think a well balanced crank would be better and not rob power. I'm sure it takes POWER to run a crank off of a chain with weights on it.

I'm no expert on designing those engines, but that't just my 2 cents.

Here my 2 cents.First it has 210 h.p. the 3.9L has 175 which in reality is closer to 160.Thats a 35-50 h.p gain.Yes it has a counter rotating balance shaft. It is not a V-8 that has opposing force each 180 degrees to cancel out vibration. The shaft robs very little power as it is extremely free running.Balance has little to do with it.It has to do with the crank throw phasing (120 degrees) unlike like the odd fire (180 degree) 3.9L.It much smoother which is prefered by soccer moms everywhere.Good news is the afore mentioned auto maker had nothing to do with it.

hate to spoil everybodys dreams of the 5.7 in the dakota r/t//but it isn't going to happen anytime soon..if at all. I am friends with a dodge truck egineer...he says look for the h.o. version of the 4.7 to be packegaed in the new dakotas..for the new SRT model..in other news though..the 5.7 will get bored out in a couple of years to 6.1 and will be available in the fullsize..so i guess we just have to wait and see what happens in the future!!

I read that the 6.1 Hemi in development is actually a completely different engine than the 5.7 Hemi Magnum. It's said to be a 383 c.i. engine, designed to replace the Magnum V10 truck engine. They're going with 383 c.i. for nostalgic reasons (or so they say).

Hrmm. 383 Mopar. That sounds familiar.

I think it only makes sense to convert it to an HO. Then you would only have one TYPE of 4.7L engine line. Half the 4.7L owners around here already have the HOs in them though :)

Goods news! 2004 for the 3.7L Dakota.Bad news no more 5.9L RT's.No 5.7L in the Dakota.Look for the improved 4.7L HO in 2005 restyled Dakota.2006 look out!Just to clarify an earlier post the balance shaft on the 3.7L is not hanging under the crank like as the old Mitsu's.It's actually where the cam would be in a pushrod motor. It's bullet proof so far.The 6.1L is the same as the 5.7L as far as design.370 c.i. not 383.It's the look out for 2006.

Its kinda off topic, but at work we have the new manifolds for the 5.7 hemi for the Durango going into production very soon, so the new hemi Durango's can't be too far off, Then the Dakota will be next it they decide to put it in there. They are a little different designs also than the Ram's manifolds.

Later,

Andrew
