I've got the 206 cams on the way, well long story short, my buddy that is my informantion bank on this kinda deal has no spring compressor that will work. One that he found (for a hefty tag of 300 dollars no less) was designed for use with the heads off the truck. So, do any of you have any pics of the 4.7 heads with no cams/rockers? A bare head with springs would be nice, and close up pics of possible but just about anything we can get will work.

Or, anyone that's screwed with this (I don't think many have yet :( ) any advice would work wonders I'm sure.

Thanks!

Im running my 206's with the stock valve springs. I was told it would be ok like that until i want to take the heads off to put the valve springs on.
Let us know how hard it is to get the springs on there.

Oh lemme tell you that's assuring, you were the freaking test truck :P

Question then, you are still on stock PCM correct? How high have you run into the RPM band with those cams and stock springs? I'm wondering about valve float, as I was PLANNING to have Marty flash the PCM shortly after and be shifting more around 5500 thereafter...I don't think stock springs will allow that though :\

Check in the back of the service manual. There is a valve spring removal tool (Miller tools) to change the valve springs with the cyl heads installed.Any dealer can order you one.Maybe even rent or borrow you one.

Some old school methods were :

1) install adapter into spark plug hole that went to your compressor tank. The pressurized cylinder would hold the valves closed. This may be very hard to do on the 4.7 which has deep holes in the valve covers because of the "hemi" style spark plug placement.

2)Get some rope like 3/8" thick or so and start with your piston down, insert the rope in to the spark plug hole then move the crank BY HAND to raise the piston near the top. The rope presses against the bottom of the valves and holds them closed. That method works better than the air.

By the way, I used a .512" lift cam on a Ford 302 with single springs all the way to 7000 RPM's. I used 289 HO heads tho that were rare. But NO floating the valves and that sucker sounded frigging GOOD at those RPM's. Damn, heads turn when you scream a V8 on the streets like that!

To reach the spark plug holes use a quality compression gauge hose that disconnects from the gauge to fill the cyl with air.(remove the shrader valve)Then mark the damper every 90 degrees.Starting with #1 cyl and running though the firing order you can do change the springs on each cyl in the order.Just turn it to the next cyl and fill with air.Your marks every 90 need to be precise so the engine will not roll.If it rolls just reset to proper cyl.Do not use a rope or put anything in the cyl.Don't forget to release the air after each cyl. dcxer, I guess you're talking about tool 8387, which looks real similar to the "rocker arm remover 8516"? Hmm..

Ive ran mine to the rev limiter @ 6000-6200rpm at the track and on the street with No Problems. I would have liked to have gotten the HO springs put in at the time but KRC didnt have the tool to do it. As of now Im waiting for a PCM flash to become available, then Ill go get the heads yanked for a P&P and at the same time Ill have the springs put in.
I wouldnt have been running the stock springs if KRC didnt think it was safe to do so. And as turns out there seems to be no problems.

I thought the engine wasn't mapped after 5500, what did it do up to 6000??

It revs to 6000, but its best to shift at 5500 due to the stock PCM.

Waltherone,

I just put the HO intake on my 4.7, which had already had the HO cams.

Since an intake manifold requires no break-in, we took it out right away to see what it did in the higher r's, like on the dyno graphs I've seen.

I took 2 gear,(5spd manual) to 6K, but it really got flat in toraue up there. I did not hit the rev limiter though. Pulled nice to about 5700 though. I only have the stock PCM, and it's never been above around 5200 before, so I think that was alot of the problem in how flat the torque got, It'd never been there before!

I think I'll spring for a flash as the next mod. I do understand your concern with the stock springs, valve float, etc. It's nice to know othes are running up there with them!

Rope it the spark plug hole-interesting-

Todd just curious, where'd you get yours and how much? I just wanna know what to plan for. I'm gonna try and find a wrecked Jeep to leech one off of, but not sure how successful that will be..
