if the system isnt completly empty you dont have to do anything but recharge the system. if you are loosing refrigerant you have a leak. a vacume wouldnt hold if there is a leak. the vacume is to remove moisture and other contaminants form the system. when mixed with refrigerants it turns to acid. 134a can be bought without a license at any auto supply house. theres a great way of checking your ac. i just bought a kit, you get a thermometer and a tire type guage that gives you ballpark on the refrigerant level low med high. about $9.00 at advanced auto. any other questions post another message

Mine needs charging too and I'm sure I may have a leak because it was charged last year too but I don't want to make a mistake in the hookup. Should I buy one of those professional style refrigeration "logs" with the gauges. When using the cheapo car store refil/charging kits how do you know you're not putting too much in or not enough? Thx.

you cant mess up. if your systm holds 3 cans of refrigerant than buy 3 cause you'll use it eventually. these ac systems have low pressure switches wich will short cycle the compressor until the charge gets close. once the compressor starts to run more steadily your getting close. put a thermometer in the vent outlet with ac on high. you should be putting out air temperatures of around 45-65 degrees.depending on outside air temp. when the system gets full the pressure in the system will overcome the pressure in the can and wont allow any more refrig to enter the system.you really cant srew this up. besides the garages want 75.00 to refill and some wont unless you find and fix the leak. also ther is a dye additive you can dump in the system to find a leak but i never had luck with it. if you only loose a pound or two a seeason keep adding it. 134a is ozone safe so for you save the earth people no fear. stay cool. you have to have ac when you have a dakota so you can keep the windows up and the tire smoke out lol.

I have a 97 dodge dakota and my ac just stoped working. I thought that it ran out of refrigerant but when I hooked up the gauge it showed that I have pressure but I am getting no cold air. I looked at the pressure when the compressor turned on and the pressure drops drastically, not to zero but close. I don't know what is going on or what is wrong but any help would be appreciated.
