I just purchased a 1991 Dakota with the 5.2 and am having some problems with engine performance. I have set the timing at 10 degrees BTDC with the Coolant Temperature Sensor disconnected. At this setting it kicks back against the starter when starting and coughs, hesitates, and backfires when accelerating. Advancing the timing 6 to 8 additional degrees improves things but produces a rough idle. It has new plugs, wires, coil, caps, and computer and no fault codes are stored. Anybody got any ideas what might be wrong? Thanks.

Try looking at the MAP sensor, fuel pressure and that all the parts in the distributor are unbroken. Why they put plastic in the distributor I'll never understand. Also, I may be wrong, and you didn't mention it, but the pre magnum engines with the stock computer don't like heavy modifications, if you have any. The computer doesn't adjust.

The 91 was a pre-mag TBI 318 and the 92+ is the MPI magnum

I'm pretty sure late model year 91 had magnum 5.2 I too also have a 91 premag V8 goiun on the road soon as I get the 95 painted

need a bolt tightening rotation diagram, re-assembly of timing gear/chain replacement for 318 4wd? anybody out there that might could help out, i'd be forever grateful.
