Subject: Serious Problem with the 45RFE tranny!
IP: Logged

Message:
I incorrectly posted this as a problem with the 42RE tranny at first. This is the correct posting.

I need some serious help with this problem ASAP. I have a 2002 Quad Cab with the 4.7 V8 and the 45RFE tranny. Ever since I have owned the truck (just over a year now) I have had a major problem with the transmission shifting out of gear. With no warning at all, the truck will sometimes shift to either second gear or into neutral on the display. When it goes to second, the engine revs up very loud and the RPMs jump to 5-6,000. When it goes into neutral, the truck loses all power (this lead to a three car accident a couple of months ago). Anyway, the vehicle had been to the dealer numerous times over this issue, but they can't seem to find anything and the have yet to be able to duplicate this occurrance. Due to this, I am going to arbitration over this issue with Diamler-Chrysler on the 25th of this month. My dealer is standing behind me in this matter, but Chyrsler is getting very nasty over the issue. What I need to know is if anyone else knows of this issue and can provide me more information on it. Thanks!

Sounds like a problem with the shifter linkage or something. Make sure that the indicator is on the correct setting. I've had mine do it a couple times(46RE on a R/T) and it was because I didn't have it fully into drive when I started out. If the tranny isn't locked into drive, it can easily jump out of gear.

True, but would this account for it going into neutral after driving about 100 miles continuously at 70+ mph? Seems to me, that if it wasn't fully in drive, something would happen before then, but I'm not sure.

Why haven't they replaced the entire transmission under warranty? If it's a tranny problem, that should do it, I'd think. If it's not, they might discover what it is while they're in there. Just wondering???
