Subject: '96 Dakota upgrade question

Message:
Hey guys, I just stumbled across this site. Some good info here.

I've got a '96 Dakota SLT with 318 & 46RE auto tranny. I'm wanting more power & Im wondering what upgrades I should do next. Here's the setup so far:

'96 Dakota SLT V8 150K miles
180 stat, Accel coil, wires, cap& rotor
electric fan, 10" K&N filter
Full 3" single exhaust w/ 3" converter, 3" flowmaster 2 chamber, exiting at stock location.
46RE Tranny rebuilt with enlarged cooling passages, extra cooler, 4 pinion planetary gearsets.
Powertrax locker, 3:55 gears
P235/60R15 Kelly Chargers

Would I see more of a benefit from headers or a PCM swap? What other tricks do you guys know?

I made two passes at the local 1/4 mile strip on a hot day & I couldn't catch traction. 15.1 @ 87 MPH. I know this truck is faster than that on the street. How do I speed this thing up w/o killing my streetability?

thanks

Skip the headers. Find a set of '92 or '93 5.2 exhaust manifolds: they are about 1/4" bigger inside diameter. You won't believe the difference. I think the guy with the '93 5.9 post has a set for sale.

RobertG, remove the plastic deflector blocking the air inlet at the grille. You could install 3:92 gears and more rubber out back, like 255/60/15. A lower treadwear number (260-300) will usually be stickier than 400. I had good luck with Bosch Platinum plugs on my '92. Lowering the truck 2-3" helps handling and aerodynamics. Your truck is referred to as a "GenII": '91-'96. Have fun!
