Subject: rough idle and stumbling rpm's

I have a 98 slt with a 5.2 in it and for a while now the idle has been gettin a little bit rough, but that's not the only problem, while i'm accelerating from say 55 to 60 the rpm's stumble, they fluctuate maybe 100 rpm's or so but it's so annoying and i was wondering if anyone had the same problem and so how they fixed it????? I need to know if it's a sensor where the sensor is and all that good stuff...lol......thanks

it might be an oxygen sensor...start your truck and put your hand out a couple inches away from your exhaust pipe, if u feel any kind of pulse or sudden "poof", than it's probably an oxygen sensor. there's one before your catalytic converter and one after...

gotanRT, I don't know if you're serious or not, but that is the craziest thing I've ever heard.
A "poof" in the exhaust is in no way a faulty oxygen sensor. It's either a misfire, or an expansion of unburned fuel in the exhaust, possibly as it goes into the cat, where it may be ignited.
If an oxygen sensor is bad enough to cause a rough idle, it would set a check engine light.
There are a lot of things that could cause a rough idle and a speed fluctuation. You've got a map sensor, throttle positon sensor, among many others. It's really something that needs to be looked at by someone who knows what to look for. If you have any faults, or codes set in the ecu, that is the first place to start.

I'd start by cleaning the t-body. Take it off the manifold to clean it, don't go spraying a bunch of solvents down the throttle bores. That's a good way to fill your cylinders with crud and to dissolve the gasket at the bottom called" the belly pan gasket". Go to the dealer and get a new t-body base gasket and remove the t-body and pay special attention to the IAC, There's a few sites that have how to's on them so you don't mess up the IAC. You cant turn the pintle or be too rough with it.

Also, while the t-body is off, look into the manifold and see if it's all gooey and sludgey. If it is it's the dreaded "belly pan gasket". Only one way to fix that.

Under OBD2, a failed o2 sensor trips the MIL so don't start replacing parts just yet.

on second thought...maybe you should grab the exhaust pipe after it's been running a few hours...then it'll pep up...

Sounds like your distributor might be heading south. see if you can feel any bearing play. Don't let the knuckleheads get to you - there's a lot of good info available here. If that's not it take tech's advice.
