Does anyone have a solution for the mess that is created by changing the oil filter on 4.7's. I dont see any good way of preventing the oil from running all over the frame and cross member.

All you do is cut a plastic 2 litre soda bottle in half. It is big enough to fit over the filter and flexible enough to allow you to squeeze so you can turn the filter. It will contain all the oil and if you use the top half all you have to do is unscrew the cap to let it drain out. Also, do your engine a favor and prefill the new filter with oil before installing. This way your oil pressure jumps up immediatlely, no sitting there watching it sitting on zero while your engine is running. Good Luck.

WTF? Why go through all that trouble with the bottle. You do not need to use a bottle, you do not need to use a bag.

Just twist it off so it start dripping down out of the oil filter before it's all the way off, let it sit there for about two minutes. Then, just take the damn thing off. You wont spill one drop. Simple as that.

I've done this the past several oil changes and I havn't spilled one drop on the ground or anywhere else on the truck.

I use the plastic bottle routine, I have not had much luck waiting for it to drain then removing becuase there is oil in the filter and I usually spill some trying to get it and my hand out thru the splash guard hole. I also use a drain valve on the pan with a short length of rubber hose attached. This way I don't have to remove the bash plate, just snake the hose down thru the existing hole in the plate and reach over and open the valve. much easier and faster than removeing that damn bash plate each time.

The pop bottle tip works great. No mess, not one drip, clean hands to boot.

A large zip-lock bag, preferably a freezer bag as they don't leak through.

Just drill a hole in the cross member where the oil drips
into and don't take filter off right away...

Well, I just changed the filter on my new 2003 Dak for the first time... The oil filter is in a halfway decent location, but... that stock Mopar filter was installed by a gorilla with an impact wrench. I got one of those oil filter caps that slip over the top of the filter, and you turn it with a ratchet, but that didn't work... All I did was twist-crush the filter like a pop can. So I had to resort to the kind of wrench that uses a bicycle chain wrapped around the filter, and that's when I discovered that there's barely any room to manipulate the bicycle chain device. I crushed the filter further, until the filter punctured and leaked all over the place and I had oil splattered all the way from halfway up the radiator to the front driver's side tire and beyond trying to take that $#!%*& filter off. I swear, it looked like someone beat it to death with a sledge hammer when I finished, but by God, I got it off.

So, now that *I* am the one to put the new filter on, I put it on hand tight, no more than 3/4 turn once the base contacts, then I fill 'er up with my usual cocktail of Valvoline 5W-30 and good ol' Marvel Mystery Oil for the last 1/2 quart to keep the the smaller than usual passages in the journals from sludging up.

LMAO, I did that once on a Ford LTD long time ago.

Had devery bit of filter torn off but the threaded plate. Ended up towing it in, and an old fart mechanic tapped on it with a screw driver...spun right off.
