its probably a 44rh but i may be wrong. look at your tag in the glove box or check the sticker under the hood

I think its most likely the 46re since a 97' catalog has the v6 with the reg. auto 4spd(44re) and the 5.2 with the HD auto 4spd(46re).

most 4x2 97 318's had the 42RE (A500) only the 4x4 and 98up got the 46re... it was after they started selling the durango's. you can check to be sure... look at the tranny pan... if it's a rectangle then you have a 42, if it is mostly rectangle with one corner that bulges out on one corner you have a 46... that's the easiest way to tell.
