Subject: Fuel Pump?

Message:
I have a 91 Dakota with about 90K miles. It's a 5.2 liter EFI with no Mods. It has been solid until lately. I had it warming up one morning and it stalled, no rough running, just died. It was low on gas, not on empty, but below a quarter of a tank. I poured 5 gallons in and it started right up. I didn't think anything about it and proceeded to the pump to fill the tank. I thought it was wierd because after filling up it took a few minutes for the gauge to register that gas had been added. On another trip not too long after, it cut right out on me. After rolling to the side, I was able to start it back up. It happened 3 or 4 more time before I got home. I started with dry gas, figuring too much water in the tank from lack of use. It did start up and idle for a while, but then cut out again and then wouldn't start at all after. So then I tried adding a cleaner to the tank and replaced the coil. It started right up for a few minutes and then cut out again after 10 minutes and would not restart. I tried replacing plugs, wires, distributor, rotor and fuel filter, but none of this has seemed to help. Every once in a while I can get a 1 sec catch when cranking but that is it. When I had that fuel filter off, I turned the key to engage the fuel pump and although gas did come out in a small stream, I would have expected a much larger flow. I am a true novice when it comes to cars, but I believe all these symptons to lead to the fuel pump, but I thought I would post it out here to pick the brain of a few people that have a lot more auto knowledge than I do. In all of the things that I have read, you can check the fuel pressure by putting a gauge in the system, but I do not have the guage and I am not sure if it is an expensive item to pick up. So I am planning on emptying the gas tank and replacing the entire fuel pump unit unless someone has a asuggestion to try first.

Thanks

When you start you truck up, do you hear the Fuel pump turn on? You can usually hear it when you turn the ignition. It sounds like a little whine sometimes.

Yes, When the truck is turned on I can hear the fuel pump activate and I can also hear it turn off a few seconds after the key is turned off.

hmmmm..... that doesnt sound like a fuel pump problem to me. I own a 92 dak LE 5.2 and I just had my fuel pump die. Mine wouldnt even turn on when my ignition was turned on. I think your pump is fine. You might have a computer problem. Did you see if your computer is throwing any codes?
