i have a 97 5.2 liter 5spd 2wd dakota sport. can i use a used mopar pcm off the exact same truck?
or does it have the vin number from the old truck programmed into it and would this matter? thanks

Yes it does matter, but you should be able to get it re-programed with urs. However, I have heard dealerships charge between 30 mins and 1 hour of labor when it is a 2 minute job. Try to find someone you know that has the equipment to do it and will charge you the standard price of a shared case of beer. :)

I have a 97 Dakota 5.2L auto and the PCM doesnt have the VIN programmed in.
I purchased the MP Performance PCMand it installed no problem (PCM didnt have the VIN)
