Subject: cold idle/stalling

Message:
I have a 2002 dakota CC with auto and 4.7 L.
At start up, I rev to 1500 rpm immediately, then
calm down to 1000, and 20 sec later, 500 to
700 rpm. The idleing at 700 is very rough. I
did the coffee cup test today on my dash and
there is a nice ring.

I used to think it was a cold weather problem,
but it stalled once at 50 degrees in the middle
of the afternoon.

I brought i to the dealer, and "we couldn't
simulate the cold starting conditions" which I
find ironic becuase it nearly stalled for me
when I turned it on to go home.

Neither of my freinds 2002 dak or durangos
have this problem, so I am thinking it is
uniquie to my vehicle.

Any suggestions?

(Sorry of the the length, but his is starting to
piss me off)

I think there is a PCM flash for that problem.

I had the "software upgrade" flash performed to my 2000 4.7 after it stalled after startup and they flashed it, cleaned the TB, NO MORE problem. Have it done. TSB on the problem

Clean your IAC which is the lower thingy on the right side of your throttle body (has wire connector going to it that pulls off) . Must have a "hex head" tool to remove it. It gets gummed up and can cause your stalling cuz the air intake during idle is not controlled properly. THis may solve your problem. Once you have it removed, don't force it to move or drop it. It is a piston type device.

It will start then stall .. It turns over but wont start. This only happens every so often.
I can get it to start if i keep giving it gas & then hurry up and put it in drive.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be ???
I have new Spark plugs/wires.
The dealer said it coul be the AIS
Is it possible it is the ignition coil ??

Like Tad said clean the IAC "motor" It is located at the rear of the TB. I takes two TORX head screws to remove (#25, I think). Clean the IAC "plunger" and the hole in the TB.

I have a 2000 Dakota Sport Club Cab 4.7 v-8 5 speed trans. I just got my truck back from the dealer yesterday. Mine was doing the same thing. The problem was the PCM (power control module), and there is a TSB on it. It's the computer chip that controls everything just about. It will solve the problem and give alot better accelleration, better fuel economy, and smoother idle. There was a big difference in the accelleration, after it was replaced. Check into it.

I've been having a similar problem with my 99. Three times now, I've gone to start it after its been sitting for a while and it won't idle. Starts right up, but then it just dies. If you give it gas, it will run, but if you let off, it dies. The last two times it did it, I held the gas for about a minute and then it would idle fine. It first did it last week after we had a lot of rain and it was colder than normal outside. Will the IAC trick work on a 99? I bought the truck used, so I don't know much about its past. I've only had it for about 2 months, so I haven't done much to it yet. Thanks.

I have a 2002 Dodge Dakota Sport and I bought it in 2004. My problem started after having it for four months. It will crank then it will die. It never idles smooth at all. It doesn't matter on the weather. It will run okay one minute and the next it won't. The problem is getting worse though. It will not crank on its own. I have to force it but giving it gas and putting it in drive. If anyone could help me I would appreciate it.

I suspect what you mean to say is it will crank fine but won't hold an idle. If that is right, you may be ready for a new battery - one of the first signs of it going is that the PCM is not getting enough voltage to remember the idle. Cranking is simply turning the motor over before it starts, I don't think you mean you are forcing that; but if so ,please explain how.

I mean by forcing it is that I have to give it gas and shift into drive while giving it gas. I already put a new battery in there about 7 months ago and it hasn't helped at all.

O.K. - then you're forcing it to idle; not forcing it to crank. If the battery is good, it could also be a dirty idle air control (IAC) on the TB (throttle body). Don't twist the plunger when you clean it or you'll need a new one.

I have a 1996 dodge Dakota 3.9 engine, truck is stalling when cold. I actually have to let it run for 15-20 minutes for it not to stall. I have replace Throttle position sensor and Idle Air control, replace wires. It starts out fine in the morning but later on during the day when I try to start it, sometimes it will go out right away. I found out if I don't warm it up thoroughly, it will eventually stall at intersection or slowing down to turn. Need help on what else I need to check for.
