Subject: Another Drag Slick Question

Message:
I am haveing trouble understanding the sizes for slicks. I have a 2001 R/T. It has the factory 17's on it and the factory RSA's. I am getting ready to get some slicks on it...while lowing the gear ratio. I was told to get the 15x8 rim with a 26 inch slick. Is this right? I also wanted to know if that means that you can only have an 8 inch wide tire...or how wide can i go. Also...by a 26 inch tire means the hight right? I measured the stock hight and it is at 26...if i got a 26 inch tire....it would stay the same hight...so how would that change my gear? I am confused...please help.

Your wheels on the R/T are 17x9's, and they have an overall diameter of 28" IIRC (that's w/ tire). If you drop two inches (by going to a 26" overall diameter), then you are effectively changing the final drive ratio of your truck (thus, giving you a lower gear; higher numerically).

Most R/T guys who run some sort of racing slick, be it a full slick or something like the Mickey Thompson ET Street slick go with the 15x8 Dakota rims.

The most common sizes are 28x11.50x15 or 26x10.50x15.

The 26" version will give you a lower final drive ratio (Like Demon said) I've heard it results to a 4.22 ratio instead of the stock 3.92 ratio.

The 26" are also the most common for guys running all motor, no blowers or nitrous. With these power adders, some have problems running out of rpm before the finish line with the 26" and go back to a 28".
