Subject: Gauges Acting Weird ! HELP !!
IP: Logged

Message:
Ok to make a long story short I have a 98 Dak Auto 318 CC. I replaced the gauges with a set from a 99+ (better looking odometer) and also installed a set of the nu-image overlays. All has been fine for about 8 months now, up untill about 3-4 weeks ago. My guages seem to 'stick', just the tach at first, now both the tach and the speedo. Everything else seems to work fine. For instance I can be crusing along the hiway and get off on an exit and my gauges are still at 2-3k rpm and 60-80 mph (or whatever). If I come to a stop my tach reads 11oo rpm (engine actually at about 750) and the speedo never goes all the way down to 0. Keep in mind this is intermitent and seems to be getting worse. I have allready pulled the gauges apart 3 times, cleaned all contacs, AND lubed them up with wd40. No help there. I am thinking of trying the original gauges and see what happens, but would like opinions first. I searched the archives and only came up with possible bad ground wire for some gauge problems...... HELP !!

Sounds to me like either you are pushing the needles on too far, or the guage overlay is unsticking and touching the needles. Try to pull the needles out a little farther than they are, and push down on the guage overlay to see if maybe it is coming ustuck and popping up a little touching the needles. Had this happen on my truck with the indiglow guages before I removed them.

I thought about that too. Unfortunatly I checked it the first time I removed the gauges. Plenty of clearence between the needles and the overlay........

Hmmm, not sure what to say then. You can run a check on the guage cluster by holding down the odo reset button while turning the key on. Keep holding it down till the odo reads "check" then release and the guage cluter will go through a self test, and will show codes at the end if it failed. Not sure where to find the code definitions for guage clusters though.
