 Subject: 5.2L High Miles?

I'm looking at buying a 1997 with a 5.2 I was wondering if 240000km (about 120000 miles) is alot for the engine and is it going to end up blowing up on me.

I'd say 120K is a lot of miles for that, or just about any engine. Probably need an engine and tranny rebuild pretty soon.

i just bought a 97 5.2 with 67,000 on it.
when i was looking , i saw a 97 with 120,000
miles and stayed away from it. although the
dealer was going to sell it for 8,000 plus a
2 year drivetrain warranty,it was a club cab
4x4.

I have a '94 5.2 with 166,000 on it with no maintenance problems. I run mine pretty hard to. The only problem I have is I go through engine mounts every 11 mo. I replaced the timing chain at 75,000, but didn't need to. When I removed it I had no slack and noticed both gears were steel and an extra wide chain. It is not exactly a double roller, because only one set of teeth, but chain and gears are wider than my '74 5.2.

Seriously though... 318's last forever. 200k probably isn't too much to ask if properly maintained.

My dad has a '92 with a 5.2 he got from my brother and it has well over 250,000 miles with not major problems and it's never left him on the side of the road!!!

I would pay more attention to the tranny than the engine. Mopar small blocks last forever when the are maintained. If it is a 4wd I look very carefully to see what kind of abuse it has bee through. Mare sure the transfer case has been serviced when it was supposed to be.

I own a 95 with 182,000 miles. She
runs 14.7@93 in the quarter and I shift
when the redline hits I have drove it for hours across country at 90+ with no problems.
I replaced the timing chain with a crane double roller at 153,000. The old one sounded like a bicyle.

I bought my '97 318 4x4 last august with 64,000. Now, not even a yr. later, i have put 16,000 miles on it.Since then I haven't had any major problems except for the brakes, and tranny slipping just a slight bit. I had the tranny FLUSHED and the transfer case fluid and filter replaced and the tranny problem was gone. Just old fluid can do that to it. But the brakes were wierd. I heard a clucking noise about every other day when i would just coast down the road. It was a cracked shoe and leaking cylider in the right rear brake shoe. $130 later, it was ok. Other than Transmission, and Brakes, the truck you are lookin at will probally be ok, Just get those two things checked on would be my advice.

Now days, 120,000 miles isnt alot to ask out of an engine, as long as its tooken care of.

jjust hit 130000 today. Runs as strong as the day I drove it off the lot. No engine or tranny issues. Orig clutch too

120, is not a lot on my 92 dakota 5.2 went 420,000 before i expercinced any problems with the motor but by then it was ready for the junk yard i wish my 4.7 in my new dakota was as good as the old 5.2.

I currently own a 97 dadge dakota 318 with a 5 speed tranny. I have 154k on it. The motor has no maintience problems but i do need to get the tranny rebuilt the main bearings r going out, but other than that the truck is great, my friend also has a 97 dodge 318 auto he has 235k on it and it runs great he takes a trip to waco every week and has no oil leaks ect.

95 318 AT 2wd 202,002 miles on Saturday. No major problem except a dripping rear tranny seal, no big deal, just haven't replaced it yet.

99' 318 AT 4x4 @110k miles and still running strong. I did have a internal oil leak back in the 20k's but Chrysler fixed that under warrenty. I plan to get atleast 200k with it. Just keep those oil changes going, and use synthetic if you can afford it.

my father had a 92 dakota 3.9 2wd sold it to a guy where he works when it had 270,000 miles on it it has 320,000 miles on it and still going strong. origanal trans, motor and timeing chain!. only thing changed on it was the fuel pump in the tank and water pump.

I bought mine with 90,000 miles on it. At 142,000 miles I added a vortech supercharger, headers... and drove it hard for the next 50,000 miles all over the eastern USA and in the heat of Florida. I now have 192,000 miles and no oil burning. I use it as my daily driver to and from work in and out of mines where the roads are dusty and bumpy. The only things that have gone bad are the external parts of the motor - water pump - alternator... I wouldnt hesitate on buying the '97 w/ 120,000 miles on it - just beware that it may require replacing some of the external parts. The motor itself is a good motor.
Gotta love them on ramps!

201,000 1999 5.2l 4X4..Tranny at 155,000.I did timing chain,water pump and ball joints(third set) and heater core at around 192,000.Daily driver,mobil 1 since new.Does not use any oil.
