Subject: HELP! rattle from cat
IP: Logged

Message:
I just installed the Gibson swept side catback and now there is a rattling sound that seems to be coming from my catalytic converter when I'm idling. The stock exhaust was a b!tch to get off, and we were tugging at it some before we just cut the thing off, and I'm wondering if we screwed something up by all the tugging or cutting. Is this something that I can easily fix myself, do I need a new cat, are there any recommendations...
thanks

it rattles for a few seconds, stops for a few seconds, rattles, stops, rattles, stops. Does that give any indication to where that loose connection or interference may be, or is it just as likely to be anywhere in the system.

If it is the cat rattling, be on the alert for any changes in the sound of the exhaust (getting quieter). Once this starts (cat is plugging up as the crumbling debris inside clog the screen) you'll loose performance pretty quick. This happened to me and I was barely able to limp my truck to the dealer to get a new cat (could only get up to 15MPH before the motor choked itself to death).

When my cat was rattling, it seemed to do it more when cold than when hot.

FYI, the dealer owes you a free cat for at least 50,000 miles.

Is that under or over 50,000. Mine is at about 63,000. Also, I know that it says its not supposed to void any warranty, but can they claim that me putting on the Gibson damaged the cat and not give me the new one.

Alright, last question, and probably a dumb one. I bought the truck used, and not from a dealer. Will a dodge dealership still replace it under those conditions? I'm gonna check this out for myself in a couple days when I get some time to get some errands done, but till then, if anyone knows the answer it would be greatly appreciated.

I have the gison exhaust on my 02 4.7 CC, did the exact same thing. the way the hanger is designed that is put in front of the muffler, for some reason it pulls back and causes the exhaust connection to rattle where the stock pipe goes into the gibson pipe, even with the clamp on it. I spot welded the connection in three spots (bottom and both sides) and the rattle went away. Hope this helps.

I don't have the equipment to weld, but is there some kind of material I can put in between the two pipes to dampen the vibration.
