Subject: 4.7 heads

I seem to have another head gasket gone.

Has anyone had their heads planed? I'd hate to have had one warp and go through all the work to change the gasket.
I don't want to do it again.

Any ideas?
Would 0.020 be okay to have them planed???

Thanks!!

Are you using forced induction?

This is the first 4.7 head gasket failure I've heard of. Maybe I just haven't heard?

No, I'm not.

It's got 115,000 miles on it, and I guess it just decided it was time to go.

By the way, it's my 3rd one.

Has anyone else had a head gasket go, or am I the only one.

It's hard to believe I've had 3, and no one else has had the problem.

I think you may be the first. Especially to have gone through three of them. That alot of miles for an engine thats only been around for three years. I've got 44K on my '00.

Damn that over 38K a year in driving. You realize of course that you have spent the better part of the last three years driving.

Maynardh,

You may be best off going with a new head. I'm not sure right off hand how much a bare unit goes for, but it would be worth it to have an unmolested piece.

I believe the truck got a little heavy winded on one of your trips, and overheated a bit. Sounds like a warped head.

Give some of the dealers a call to see how much a new head, assembled and bare would be. It might price out just a bit more than having the heads decked??

Apparently, the heads at the dealer (my dealer with no hook ups) is about $350 for an assembled head. Not sure if that includes the cam or not, but that's the price on an HO head. I bet the stock 4.7 heads are cheaper than the HO's.

I doubt they are much differnt in price. I think the HO's are about $500ea or so unassembled... At least If I remember correctly. Not sure if that included the Cam as well...

I'm glad to finally hear of someone else who has had the problem.

I think I'll probably go .030 and be safe. But .040 sounds better.
