I can't give you any real technical insight, but my 97 5.2L 4x4 has done real well by me, and it handled that snowstorm that hit Maryland like it was nothing. 3 ft of snow, mud, or pavement, owns them all.

Love my 5.2!! 60000 miles and no problems. And those haven't been the easiest miles either! Lots of power (lots of mods too) and get consistent 17-20 mpg.

I doubt BradC has a 4x4 if he's getting gas mileage like that. I'm lucky to get 10-11 in the city and 13-14 on the freeway.

But I got over 90,000 on my 99 Dak and it's ran pretty well so far except for the engine ping (but with running super unleaded.. I don't hear it). A few replacements have had to happen like the battery, water pump, belly pan gasket and of course the infamous brake problem...nothing major though.

I've pulled, boats, double horse trailers, u-huals, and it's still running strong. Best part about it is that I'm finally going to have it paid off this December.. woo hoo.. I'm never buying a brand new vehicle again.. what a waist of money. I think my truck was $27,000 new and now it's probably only worth $6-8k. That's a 70% loss in less than 4 years (yikes). I'm going to wait one more year and find me a used Ram with a hemi.

I have a lowered 97 5.2l e/c 2wd that I have modified for performance. It responds very well to all the hp mods. Magnum R/T heads, KRC210B cam, MSD, headers, cat-back, Holley 50mm TB, Powerdyne s/c with 6lbs boost and 17" R/T wheels with perelli 255/60/17 tires. It had the trailer towing package (3.55 gears). I have no problem smoking the tires (when I can get the s/c to put out 6lbs). The performance is awesome. It even performed really well without the s/c with the stock computer. The only problem I have had with the cam was the reduced vac. (10 in)

The engine ping in the Dodge 5.2L V8 is due to the upper plenum (intake manifold gasket). I bet if you check your oil often, you will see that you are using oil. The cat-converter burns it off so you don't see blue smoke. The oil leaks into the intake manifold and makes it sound like a spark knock at around 2.5K RPMs. Call a Dodge dealership and they will tell you. Your truck is also equipped with a knock sensor, it could be bad. The knock sensor advances and retards the timing, you could be running retarded which means less horsepower.

I've got a 97 Dak w/ the 5.2 approaching 82,000 miles and I have so say I absolutly love this truck. Not a damn problem with it and it's not like it's been pampered. Got a ton of things draining power from it too like my amp, 4 xtra fog lights, yea u get the idea. But not a damn problem and not to mention the power too. Man I tell ya if I say get up and go... The engine roars and the pavement... well... gets a lil more rubber on it lol. But to sum it up I love this truck.

i have a 97 5.2 5spd 2x4 reg cab dakota sport with 20s, lowered 3/5 , m1, KN FIPK, full msd ign, mopar perf. comp and some other knick knacks. before the m1, the bad belly pan gasket robbed a lot of power and the stock ride quality is bad but it is a truck after all. (in my town, im one of few good looking fast trucks, everybody else has damn s10s or extremes with wings and crap
