Subject: Help please??? Check engine light!
IP: Logged

Message:
Well, leaving work yesterday I noticed two things about my truck.
1.) The check engine light came on, and there is only 33k miles on it. IS there some kind of "mandatory" maintenance they are trying to tell you to get by making this light come on at 33k (my old Jeep commanche did that at 80k for the O2 sensor)?
2.) When I bought the truck the sales-person said it had the 4.7L, but my gas milage was crappy even for this engine. Looking under the hood I realized, this is the 5.9L!! WOW!

Anyway, any ideas on the check engine light? The engine ran fine going home, but I don't want to drive it if there is something critically wrong.

TIA
Michael

I know on my 2001 4.7, you can check the engine code by turning the key on, off, on, off, on quickly and look at the odometer. It will display any codes there (starts with a "P"). I don't have any codes, but I heard that you might see a "55" as the last default code which doesn't mean anything. Mine just says "DONE".

Once you have the code, find out what it means online.

Try to clear the code and see if it happens again. Just remove your battery cable, turn ignition to on (not start) wait 15 seconds, and reconnect battery.

No, I bought a truck expecting to get the 4.7 I had asked for and they said I was getting. That I didn't have a reson to look under the hood for the engine size sticker should be considered a compliment to Dodge. A Ford would probably have broken down long before this.

And the verdict was, a shorted wire on the "purge Solenoid" on the firewall.
Anyone know what this "purge solenoid" is for?

Chris O, If you stick around you will find that someone on these boards has experienced almost everything that can happen to these trucks. Never be afraid to ask, always dismiss the stupid responses and you will learn a LOT of really good $$ saving information...

well on most newer vehicles the check engine light comes on ever couple thousand miles, It might just be saying that its time to get everything check like air filter, plug wires, plugs and grease all the fittings. You should just be able to clear the codes with a scan tool.

To answer the original question, Dodge programmed the light to come on every 30,000 miles to scare their customers into bringing it into the dealer(term used loosely) to have the code reset, and to charge you for the "30,000 maintenance routine"
sheesh.....

ive got a 2002 4.7l v8 with 43k miles and my light came on. I had it diagnsosed at my local autozone for free and it came out to be that my control module isnt working. The light doesnt necessarily mean you need to change the oil cuz every time i was going to change mine, my truck was past the 3k miles. IF the light stays on..it means to have the truck checked..it will still run fine. The problem could be anythng from a sensor to a module. If the light blinks, then you IMMEDIATELY need to have it checked. Read the owners manual..it helps a little resolve your problem

I have just replaced the timing chain on my 95 Dakota 3.9 magnum. When all was said and done, I went to start it and the check engine light is staying on and the truck is running pretty rough at idle. When you increase the idle, same thing, rough running. Driving is rough in the beginning, but after it gets up in RPM, it seems more smooth. I only took it for a short ride and figured it would be safe to let it sit for now. I read a post here that a guy said he hoped that his check engine light wouldn't be on after replacing the chain/gears/tensioner. I take it that this is bad? I replaced the OEM gears and chain with a NAPA 3 piece gear set and new updated Mopar tensioner plate. The old parts had some wear and the chain was stretched quite a bit, BUT, it ran better than now with the old parts, it was just very loud/annoying from the timing chain chatter. I hope you can help, THANKS!!!

it sounds and runs great so i don't care about it

the error code is "432 The catalyst seems inefficient (#2)." Probably a differential reading betweet one of you cat's O2 sensors. This could mean that your cat needs replaced or that one of your O2 sensors has become fouled and needs replaced. I would pull the O2 sensors first and check for heavy carbon buildup on them. If so, replace them both. A little expensive if you get them from the dealer.

yikes..

The service engine soon light is not tripped by mileage. It indicates that some component has failed causing vehicle emmissions to exceed mandated limits...

Often times a non-emission component failure will NOT cause a service engine soon light.

on '99+ trucks if you turn the key on - off - on - off -on -off - on they will display the trouble codes in the odometer..

90% of the time you'll wind up with a P045x (evaporative emmissions failure). If you happen to be driving an '02 odds are it needs a PCM reflash to correct an erroneous p0456.

NOTE: turning the key on/off sometimes gives you engineering codes along with the standard P codes, these mean zip / zata / nothing, and you won't find 'em in your OBDII chart. Disregard and move on.

Leo
