Subject: Question before I buy
IP: Logged

Message:
Well I have called every dodge dealer in ohio and parts of PA and came up woth one 4x4 ex cab 5speed dakota. Its a 99 and go figure has a 5.2L engine. I was wanting a 3.9 or 4.7 at most for mileage. If i can get a really good deal on the 5.2 how much is that gonna end up hurting at the pump. Think it can squeeze out a 20mpg hwy. what about city traffic?
Thanks,
Dan

I have a 99 with a 5.2 5 speed, the original sticker said 16 - 19 MPG same as the 3.9. NO WAY!
I get 16.5 mostly highway driving below 70 MPH in the summer. In the winter I get 14.8 same conditions. I live in the northeast and I heard the winter gas distributed up here causes that, but I am certain the lower operating temp of the engine makes it run little richer. I don't care what anyone says your not going to see 20MPG out of any Dakota, my brother has the 3.9 auto and he only gets 18 with a tonnue cover. If you want a good millage pickup, go buy a 2 wheel drive 4 cylinder toyota (but that's no fun).

I get over 20 hwy, 01, 4.7, 5spd, 3.55lsd, 2wd, etc.,
going fast, heavy Quad cab, with a/c on.

But I know it's not apples to apples, not a 5.2.

I just added it cause donpeter said no dakota, and he's wrong. Probably not a 4x4 though!

'99 CC 5.2 4x2 Auto w/3.55 gears, check my profile for mods. Last tank full of Winter Fuel (we're forced to less efficient blend from October thru late March), 16.1 MPG, that's 40% city/60% highway.

The best I've gotten is a skosh under 19 MPG (18.8), all highway commuting, albeit, driving like an old lady, and keeping it at 65 mph, on cruise control.

I’ve yet to take a really long trip with this rig, and I’m curious to see how it will do, mileage-wise.

I log all my fuel usage, and calculate my mileage directly, as opposed to using the trip computer, or 'guessing', as some may do. Average fuel usage since I've owned the truck is around 15.8 mpg. You should expect to average around 1 mpg less, on a 4x4.

My next mod will be the removal of the engine driven fan, replacing it with a Flexalite Black Magic 150 electric. Most who’ve tried it report improvements ranging from .5 to 2 mpg.

If you are looking for a 4x4 that you can get fuel mileage out of, go toyota. If you want a real truck, the Dak is the only one. To my knowledge, there isn't a Dak 4x4 of any configuration that is gonna get you better than 17mp/g at best. play the best cards, manual trans, part time t-case and not the 31"tires. One V-8 is as economical as the other, The 4.7 being the better design. period. The v-6 is WAY underpowered for any Dak that may be used as a truck. You will be happier driving your Dak to the pump than you will be towing your ford/chev to the mechanic

I have to agree with Dally's opinion regarding the 4.7. It's certainly a more efficiant power plant then the 5.2, right from the get-go.

If i can get the guy wit the 5.2 to go low enough in price i may jump on it. otherwise i drove a 4.7 today and that has to be the most fun i'v had driving ever. great truck but was way to expensive. 10k miles and 20k dollars. had every option though. I can get the 5.2 for a shade over 14k.
thanks for your input, and wouldnt catch me dead driving a toyota, and i dont care for ford or chevys answer to the dakota :) Its gonna be dodge or stick with car!

Chev and ford don't even have an answer to the Dak. there your right. And I AM A DAK OWNER. But dont sell the newer toyotas short. they are a really good truck, and are comparable to the Dak.4x4, right down to the hemi style 4.7L v-8. If Dodge didnt make a Dak, the toy would be my choice.
I go wheeling with a couple of guys that have them, and they 4X better than alot of others (and, as well as the Daks)
