On this same note, what LSD or lockers can be put in without having to reset the gears? My fiend is looking to put one in his fullsize Gm with a 10 bolt and we want to do this ourselves.

You should reset the gears... Note: your gears might make a whining sound if they are not exactly in the same mesh pattern as stock...

it's not hard to install, just takes time and persistance... you will probably have to take it apart and adjust the shims etc 3-4 times to get everything correct... while you have it apart it's a good idea to replace the bearings etc... just get a complete install kit, borrow a dial indicator and a few beers... don't get frustrated it will take a few times to get it correct.

If you just change the diff carrier using the same gear set, there are no shims to deal with. instead the carrier uses adjusters that turn in and out. If you send me your email I will email you the instructions. If you have not got the diff yet let me know and I will give you the name of the company I got mine from.

Search Powertrax. you can install these in a couple of hours with no resetting of factory pinion lash. they arent expensive and they work great

I had considered the Powertrax, but the man at the speed shop said if I'm putting it in a vehicle I drive on the street daily I should reconsider. There noisy when locking and unlocking. Not to mention more expensive than LSD.

I've heard that the Powertrax are notorious for grenading the rear ends, even on normal street use.

The man at the Speed Shop doesn't knwo what he's talking about. Get the PowerTrax Non-Slip Traction system. It's extremely quiet on the street. I have one in my truck, and it's many times better than the factory LSD. Also, as mentioned before, you can install it in your driveway in under 2 hours with minimal tools, and requires no lashing of gears since you don't mess with the gears. www.powertrax.com

Just key in powertrax in the search area, a list will appear on screen. The powertrax is a mechanical, locker with no wiring or air system required. The only thing you need to keep in mind, is, get off of the gas when cornering. Because they are torque actuated, if you hit it moderately hard, you are gonna lock em up (as it was designed to do) Also, do not put this in your front diff. You will lose the ability to steer.
Enjoy.

I've had it installed in a truck for a year and a half now. Had it in my '99 R/T that I wrecked, pulled it out of that, and now have it in my '00 R/T. When I took it out of the '99 after about 20-30K miles, it showed no signs of wear. Works flawlessly. No more one wheel wonders around corners, and better traction on wet and slick surfaces. As mentioned before, any amount of throttle will lock up the cogs on the PowerTrax and you will more or less have a solid rear axle around corners. Which ain't a big problem.
