Subject: "Dumb Blonde" needs help with fuel pump?

5.2 v-8, not 4WD, Automatic

First of all, fuel gauge reads empty when full.
Reads 1/2 tank when 1/2 full.

Now, Truck died and would not start again.
I "listened" at the fuel tank and did not hear the pump.
I tried the little valve up by the fuel rail (per instructions of a co-worker) and no fuel spit out.

Does this automatically mean the fuel pump is bad? Yes, there is fuel in the tank.
Next question, in the Chilton's Manual it is showing the fuel pump above the starter in the engine compartment. Auto store says it is in the tank as does everyone else who knows it is a fuel injected engine.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Laurie

you may want to check to see if the pump is getting power and has a good ground before replacing the pump. most likely,it's the pump. also about your gauge problem.you will need to replace the float level sending unit.

When I called the parts store they said the pump kit came with a new sender and some other items. Can you check for power to the pump without taking the tank off?

hey laurie, you can check the power to your pump easily. there is an electrical connector on top of the pump in the fuel tank. un-snap the red safety clip and then slide the connector off of the pump. i dont have the schematics with me right now but you get the ideal. also, check the fuel pump relay in the PDC and also check the fuse for the pump. your right about the new pumps coming with new sending units. need any help email me. i got the answer to all questions. lol

I had the same thing happen to me when I got my high flow fuel pump put in. I just filled it up and was cruzing around and looked down and it was 1/4 from empty when it had just read 1/4 to full..I was like WTF? The other weird thing is that the on board computer ya know the one at the roof which told you how many miles you had before u ran outta gas, you could just sit there and watch the numbers count down, THEN after awhile they'd climb back up to the normal position.

I shouldn't have a bad fuel pump if its brand new

I appreciate your advice and suggestions. I think it will be a job for a qualified professional this time. Anyone have any recommendations for the St. Paul/Minneapolis area? Thanks again, Laurie
