My 2003 4.7 4X4 (&N and Gibson exhaust) is turning the exhaust pipe black. Dealer says all is OK according to their diagnostics. Mileage is 12 in town 14 on hwy. I think it sucks. Is this normal? I would expect the tailpipe to be light brown if the mixture were right? Is this the norm? Have 2500 miles on truck.

If you have perfect combustion your by product would very basically be water. If you don't have perfect combustion(which no vehicle ever has)by products such as carbon are produced. When you introduce sulfur(which is a common additive to gas) you get carbon dioxide and sulfuric acids.

the sulfuric acid separates the carbons and they are left on you tailpipe. It is perfectly normal, however the most effecient motor will not leave any deposites.

your in the clear, black smoke however is a different story

Mike,

My heavy, 01, SLT Quad Cab, 4.7L, 5spd manual, pulling my 20ft catamaran sailboat, gets better MPG than that, way better.

Is that an overhead display estimate?

I agree your truck is fine. The better the oil the less carbon is produced. High boil off, high flash point, low volitility and low ash are all things to look for.

i have 03 4.7 qc 4x4 auto and got the same mpgs you did.i went to synthetic oil(amsoil), bosch plat + 4s(4418s),180 t-stat, and no clutch fan. mpgs went from 12-14 to 14-16 and a best of 17. after all fluids are synthetic maybe a tad better. your truck may "loosen up" a little, plus check tire pressure(i run 38 all around), so look for improvement. meantime enjoy your truck and hope gas prices keep coming down.

Glad to hear this "normal". My mileage was actual reading based on miles/gas used. I'm going to try the synthetic route after a few more miles.
