I have a 1995 318 4x4 Dakota.I think the oil pump is going bad.The dealer wants a outrageous price to change a oil pump. They say its mostly labor. Is it that hard of a job? Can it be done in the driveway with no special tools? Thanks for any help

Why do you think the pump is going bad? Generally, an oil pump either works or it don't work at all. It's basically a gearset rotating in a body.

its not that hard of a job.about 4hrs.
check the shaft that drives the dist and oil pump
it may have broke, where it goes into the oil pump.
you,ll need to pull the dist[keep in mind how the dist and rotor button are pointed so you can getyour timing back, plus once the dist is out DON,T turn the motor] now that the dist is out take a straight tip screw drive and back the shaft out[look at the slot in the shaft and make sure you put the slot back at the same degree it was when you removed it,this is inportant too]

now you can look at the shaft on the end that goes
in the pump.there should be about 1inch that is eight sided, plus its a little rounded on the edges.if not its its broke.take a strong magnet and try to get the broken piece out of pump,if not you,ll have to pull the pump.

hope this helps.
