Have a 2003 4.7 4X4 with Gibson and K & N inbox filter. Air box inlet looked awful small....so I tried and old dirt bike trick and drilled three 1.5 inch holes in the fender side (cold side) of the air box. Nice sound when you get on it...but, from the forums (your) past experience, did I hurt/screw anything up -- did I have more actual HP with original snorkle? Gas mileage has increased with filter and holes about 1 - 1.5 mpg.

I made an 'air damn' that keeps the 'cooler' air separte from the engine heated air, It was easy, and uses the stock air box, K&N drop in, and gets rid of the air hat and accordian tube. With the snorkel and the rubber off, it takes it from the front and the opening in the fender also.

If you like what you did, go for it! NO big gains or looses here I don't think.

Regarding warmer engine bay temps, Todd's right, you prob wont be able to tell power difference by the "seat of the pants" mode. Although, you are getting warmer air the way you have it. Ive learned from this forum that the stock intake takes cooler air from the cowel vents under the windshield, it travels forward through the fender and into the snorkle. As far as im concerned, unless your looking for tenths of a second on the strip, the way you have it will do just fine on the street. And I love the sound it makes.

Todd, we've got basicly the same intake, except I kept my snorkle on, check out the pic on my profile page or click on my link below for more pics... I think it's a great setup.

Well, I stand corrected. With the air dam bringing cooler air from the grill, I dont see how a cone shaped K&N could bring in cooler air than your drop in. You should try to rig a horn shaped collecter from the grill to you box. Any way, your idea was Def a cleaver one...Good Job.

I have done the very same thing, the only difference is that I had some 4" thin wall PVC and cut it 8-10 inches long at a slight angle and simply installed a 1/4 threaded rod through it two inches from the end and tightened it to make it oblong like the entry to the airbox.Well holy sheet it was a perfect fit.The end sucking the air was flared sort of like a horn and is only 4-5 inches from the grill so basically ram air.Works great and I could feel more response for sure.It was cut at a slight angle at the airbox end to point it more towards the opening of the grille once the rubber flap was removed. Now it is always sucking colder air mostly when moving. One more thing if you take a fine file to the edges in the airbox it wouldn't hurt mine had lots of rough edges.who knows?I'll try and get some pics by Saturday if interested.

darcy- was that tube custom made or is it just one of those apc style intakes you use for hondas? there 3 inch polished material in about the right lengths. the coplers might be the only thing in question. also how much wire loom did you use looks good.

steve-do you have any pics? that seems like a good setup. I'm thinking of putting my air box back in.

Conig - no, the intake was cut out of a mandrel bent aluminum "U" pipe, bought the pipe at an auto parts store, cut it to size and polished it at home. The couplers are from also from an auto parts store. The blue wire loom, let's see... I used about 1 and a half bags of the Taylor Wire kits, they contain about 5 feet of all of the different sizes, and a whole lot of blue zap-straps... Thanks, I'm really happy with how it looks. Next I want to add some braided stainless lines in there...
