well I did see a pic of a dakota dually, I would assume some serious work required to get an adequate conversion, just curious here but why a dakota dually, just go buy a full size dually from one of dodge or gm

Anything is possible. Honestly I do not think it would be that hard if you are not looking to work the snot out of it then you are looking at dual wheels with the inner one having near stock backspacing then molding on some dually fenders and extending the fuel filler...

Gor for it man..., but if you want it to be functional I would upgrade the rear-end to something a bit stronger.

Considering that I've not only seen dually compact trucks and vans, but I've seen dual rear axle compact trucks and vans.

The main components of a dually setup would be a spacer to kick the bolts out a couple more inches, new rims (dually style), and massive fender flares. This would NOT however, increase the load capacity. You're still suspension, drivetrain, and frame limited.

I'm not looking to make it for towing horses and anything at all really. With this in mind would I have to change the suspension, or drive line.

not if you do not intend to work it any harder than it was originally designed... I would almost think this could be a small step backwards as far as axle bearing life is concerned...

if you undertake such a task, get yourself a ram dually and well take what you need off of the ram ie axle, tires/rims, and maybe some suspension stuff and should work, but yeah just keep in mind that it wont haul more unless you do upgrade the rest of the truck to handle the capacities, and your rear end will be super light resulting in piss poor traction

I've seen a Gen I Dakota with a dually conversion, years ago. I don't know any spec's on it, but like Chris said anything is possible.

definitely anythign is possible. The only reason I say bearings more often is that when turning the loads on the outside of the axle will be greater as well as the wheen weight...

So what kind of school project is this? details?

Chris

My high school mechanics final project. We start in Grade 10 and work on vehicles. I finished mustang 5.0 conversion and am selling the $6000 CDN. dakota at he same time. No engine I put a 4.7 in it. It just needs body work and painting and I think that a dually would not only be different but out here in the country I will fit in?

Finding the rims to fit is going to be a problem, most dually rims are 8 lug (or more for even larger trucks). What you'll effectively need to do is get a dually Ram's axle and have it narrowed. Or have a set of custom rims made w/ the 6x4.5" bolt pattern (don't quote me on the spacing) and use narrow rims and a wide fender flare.

Why would the outside of the axle have a greater load. It should be the same as with a single rear wheel right?

It's because of the fact that it's harder to twist on firm surfaces. The same would happen with a larger tire alone.

Also when the outside tire is lifted or exerts a load (such as in cornering, bumps, etc.. The moment arm of the force is now located much further from that outer bearing than on a fegular dually.

Also... Duallys normally ahve full floating rear ends and out daks have semi-flaoting. In normal driving this should not make a difference but it is something to consider. I would go with something larger than the 8 1/4 you probably have to start with.

One thing I would like to add, if you do use a true one tone axle from a fullsize (might have to narrow it) in order for the dual wheels to fit (8 lug for example) the front spindals would have to be changed also to make all the wheels match (major work here). Dually's have 6 matching wheels, all with the same offset. This way the front tires can be incorporated into your tire rotating schedual.
