I have a 99 R/T single cab, totally stock (or I think, read on). I bought the truck used at 65k and it now has 73L
I recently took my truck to get the emissions checked. The guys at the inspection place asked me what kind of engine I had in my truck. I responded with a 5.9 magnum. They then informed me that I was wrong and that it was a 5.2. WHAT??? Acckkk.
Their decision was based off of a sticker under my hood that reads out 5.2 liter. This sticker also talks about the full cell, solenoids settings and a bunch of other crap. I'm kinda pissed at this point.. Me not even having any kind of clue about engines or performance does not help at all.
I also called up the local dodge dealership and talked to a mechanic about this. He told me to read off the vin number. He then told me that it was a 5.9 and there was no way someone before me could have put a 5.2 into my truck. He said It was impossible to put a 5.2 into the r/t without causing problems. anyhow.....
My question to you guys is this. Is there any EASY way I can find out what I have under the hood? Also, since I bought the truck used, is there a realistic chance that the previous owner blew the original 5.9 and decided to put in a 5.2? Is that possible and why would he do that, money reasons?? And didn't they stop making the 5.2's?? The last question relates to the sticker under my hood. What's up with this sticker? Does this sticker have to be specific to the engine or is it something generic that Chrysler put on there?

if you bought it at 63k, and it had no engine mods, chances are its the same engine that came with the truck.
i am 99.5% sure its a 360. it is possible that the previous owner put a 318 in it, but with all of the changes that would have to have been made, it would be cheaper to just put a 360 back into it.
just peel that sticker off, and take it somewhere else to get it smogged.

Look under the Engine on the Drivers side by the exhaust manifold it will say what size it is.

Are you sure it's a real R/T
Anyone can bolt on the rims, lower the suspension and slap on decals.

I would have to agree, if the vin has a Z in it you have a real R/T and most likely a 360.

No it was not hit. NONE of the screws have been turned at all. And the Vin number has a Z in it. I'm pretty sure it's the 360 in it. I'm just not sure what that sticker under thw hood means..

Check the harmonic balancer. A 360 balancer is thicker and will have a section that is thinner to balance the crank. A 318 is a thin piece and there is no spot taken out for weight since it is internally balanced.

might just be a different hood, maybe had an aftermarket one, then got a replacement, etc....i would trust the vin a lot more than a sticker, and you could just take it to a dealer and have them look at it

I agree. I think I'm going to take over this weekend and settle all of this quickly. I'm gonna be pissed if it's a 318 in there. If that's the case anyone here got hook ups for a 360?
