Question: I have 43000 miles on my RT and I'm experiancing problems shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. It's shifting about 500-700RPM higher than normal. Higher the more you step on it. Also, it does not shift into second gear when shifting manually. Any ideas?

Also, a clunking noise from the front end when making turns over bumps at slow speeds especially right turns. Any insight would he helpful

The shifting could be a couple of things, your tranny could be about ready to crap out on ya, you could have a bad seal and the tranny could be leaking fluid. The best thing to do is to check the fluid in your tranny, just pop the hood and use the tranny dipstick and check the level just as if you were checking your oil level. (just make sure your engine is running when you do this)

Jeff: Checked out the fluid and everything seems to be OK. Level, color, no particles or anything. What I've been hearing accross the message boards is that it may have something to do with a bad selenoid???

This is just my $0.02 from reading in message boards, and my experience from working at a dealership. It may seem like a good idea to try replacing some parts to try to fix it, but in the long run it MAY be worth your while to just take it to a Dodge Dealer and pay their diagnostic fee. Here is the reason I say this. Just a couple weeks ago there was a guy that came in with his car and said, "It runs rough, I can't figure out what's causing it! I replaced the Spark Plugs, Spark Plug Wires, Ignition Module, Coils, Fuel Filter, MAP Sensor, IAC Valve and it still does it." At my dealership, for that vehicle, that's about $500-600 just in parts. He finally paid us to diagnose it, we replaced an injector, and he was out the door with a $250 bill. Feel bad for the guy, should have just brought it in to us first, would have saved a lot of money.

At any rate.. the fluid is definitely something you should check for level and color/smell. Beyond that I'd see what some of the opinions are from some of the other people here. Maybe just drop by your local Dodge Dealer and ask someone there. I had a problem with a misfire at steady highway speeds, the guys said it sounded like a distributor problem, explained to me why, I bought a new one, and problem was gone. I like my dealer, of course I just spent about $2,000 in the Parts Dept in the last few weeks. Some people hate their dealership.

Noone knows your truck like the technicians that work on trucks like yours every day. The dealership probably spent thousands of dollars for training for each Tech. Our dealership averages about $40,000 in training for each of the main service techs. Again just my $0.02...

(sorry from rambling)

Had a similar problem on my truck (not an RT)

It was the Transmission output sensor.

Steve I would probably do what Pool Shark said and just take it to my dealer if I was you. You checked all that you can check so now I would just bite the bullet and give the dealer your truck for a day or two..Sometimes you just cant find the problem yourself.

Took it to the dealer on Saturday and they told me I needed a transmission overhaul $2000+. Can you believe that with only 43,000 miles on it??? Out of warrenty I don't have a leg to stand on at this point.

Furious as hell I paid the $39 diagnostic fee for them telling me I need a new trans and got the hell outta there. My friend who's a mechanic for Hyundia is going to take it apart and fix what needs fixing. Probably just a bad seal or two. Seal kit $100 bucks... nuf said. I can't tell you how pissed off I am with that Dodge dealer (Webb Dodge) and Chrysler for that matter.

Does Dodge overhaul the trans, or do they swap it out complete with a rebuild?
Steve, I take it that the shifting is taking place at a higher rpm, and not slipping?
I'm not familiar with your trans, but you can check the linkage as well, and make sure it's adjusted right.
