Subject: 45RFE torque converter
IP: Logged

Message:
I recently purchased a 2002 quad cab with 4.7L/45RFE trans.

I have noticed that when I first pull out of the driveway in the morning, the torque converter seems to slip alot (high engine RPM, not much speed). Once the transmission shifts out of first everything seems normal. It won't do it again (even in first gear) until it sits up overnight. Maybe this is normal operation, I am not very well versed in auto trans / torque converters. I did read that the torque converter uses temperature as one of it's inputs so maybe it is just a warmup thing.

It is normal. It just needs to warm up a little.

Normal all automatic daks not just the 45RFE
And you may find this hard to believe but I think it has more to do with the clutch fan and not the tranny.

That is what I was going to say. Is it the enine actualy reving or does it just sound like it because the fan is roaring. Mine roared once and a while and I just hated it so I went electric, much better.

OK, it happened again this morning. The RPMs are the same during accelleration whether the engine is roaring or not so it must be the fan clutch.

I guess I don't understand fan clutches. Why would it be engaged when the engine is cold? I thought the fan clutch was supposed to engage when the engine was hot.

Clutching the fan
IP: Logged

Message:
The reason you hear the noise when cold is due to the thickening of the silicone fluid in the mechanism. This will thin out a little as you accelerate the engine, then the clutch will perform normally.
This is normal. When you do not hear a roar is when I would start to worry or if it roars all the time.
Otherwise you are fine.

Thanks for the info. This is a great resource!

I just sold my 1987 Mazda B2000 with 155K miles on it and bought the Dakota. I think it's going to take me a while to get used to all the new stuff. Thanks again.

I also have a 2002 cc 4x4 4.7 45RFE,
It also reaves high when it is cold.
I also find this very annoying and I am not familiar with this type of transmission.
This is my first Dakota truck.
I brought it into the dealership on the second day and the mechanic could not find anything wrong.
Is it possible to use a different type of fluid to fix this problem?

No spent all the money on the truck and don't have a camera. LOL All I did was hook up a thermostatic switch to the stock electric fan and adjusted it to turn on just after the thermostat opens. Then chucked the fan in the shed with my air box, muffler, tail pipe, and convertor. The question that I have right now is will it pull enouph air to cool the engine and A/C at the same time if it is hot out? Guess I will find out. BTW if you don't get the thermostatic switch the fan will not turn on until 210-220, to warm for my likings.

week old v-8 has same behavior of high rpm and staying in first gear longer than normal. especially noticeable after the nice 20 below nights we are having.

didnt matter 10 minute idle or 30 min.

Solution: guess i don't tear out of my driveway when it's cold. Old memory: someone once said to idle in neutral to warm up the tranny when it is really cold. never quite figured out if it helped(always too much in a rush)

behavior does not seem to be flaw; it seems just a little more noticeable for these transmissions than other automatics...

just to note, 1999 v6 i just sold behaved the same way for 3 yrs(again, more so in winter).

Reverse problems?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2002 Dakota Quad Cab with the 4.7L and 45RFE 4 speed automatic transmission. Currently have about 16k miles. Just started noticing that it takes longer than normal for reverse gear to engage, and periodically the transmission will "slip" a little while backing. Does not seem to be temperature related (engine cold/hot). Other than those 2 symptoms, have not noticed anything else out of the ordinary. I called the dealer to ask if they know of any problems, and the technicians are not aware of anything. Has anyone else had this problem and/or know a possible cause and solution?

More like a UPS delivery truck. I have a 00 QC SLT 4.7 and im always wondering when the trans will go. I have never owned a vehicle with such a quarkey transmission. This is the first non GM vehicle Ive owned. Ill live with it though my dodge is well built and ive run 90k on the odomiter and only 300 or so dollars in repairs.

Good point on the fan clutch. I picked up an 09 4.7 a couple of weeks ago, and the fan only roars periodically (and moreso when the engine is warm). I was beginning to think I had something going wrong...

CW, would you tell me more about your mods?
I have a 98 Dakota 5.2 Magnum, automatic, one catalytic convert w/ one O2 sensor each end
Ive heard of other people having trouble after porting their throttle bodies?
Also wondered about your IAT adjuster...i dont use AC so is it worth it?
And what does that voltage setting do to the TPS?
What would a CatBack do for me?
I'll probably come up with some home-made cold air intake
