Hi All,

OK... I know this isn't a place for Jeep guy's to post at, but I have a 2000 Jeep TJ that has the 2.5L engine and it's time go go bigger.

So, if you had your choice of modern Dodge V8's... what one would you stuff in?

I know bigger is better, but I'm posing this to find out if the new 4.7L is good or if there are any known problems with the 5.2L or 5.9L engines that would make me not want to use them for my swap. Also, I've heard good things about the new hemi, but they are a little hard to find in the wrecking yard.

Thanks in advance

Tony

My prefs in this order;
4.7
5.9 or 5.2
Why not build a 4.8l L6 stroker? There's a few sites with the info. The challenge to mating a Mopar V-8 is that not too many people have done it so finding an adapter might be tricky. I think Dakota 4x4 trans and tcase is too lang.

Easiest thing is to mount a SBC. Everybody does it. Checkout advanceadapters.com. I'd go SBC.

BTW I had the same rig. I loved it but man was it gutless. And it burned tons of gas. It broke my heart to trade it in but driving it on the highway was an exercise in risk management.

hi,

The reason I wouldn't do a stroker is because it would be more work than just stuffing in a V8... plus it would cost more. The jeep I6 and I4 use different tranys so I couldn't just bolt up the stroked I6 after I was done building it.

As far as the Dodge swap goes... I am planing on using a NV3550 or NV4500 trany from a dodge. (It will be an upgrade from my AX-5) And my NV231 T-case will bolt up to the dodge trans without any probs. Although... I don't know what trans they are putting behind the 4.7L. I would guess it was the NV3550.

I thought about a SB Chevy, and Advace Adapters makes a bellhousing to mate that engine up to my trans... But it wouldn't be able to hold the power for long. The AX5 is know to break with the 2.5L engine in front of it.

Lastly... since Dodge and Jeep are both owed by DC... The computers are the same, and it is possible to splice the Dodge V8 engine wiering harnes in to the Jeeps Chassis harnes and have the OBD II, guages, air bags, and all other sub systems work. (makes for any easyer swap) I guess I should mention that I have already done a rear axle swap, so the new found HP of the V8 shouldn't be a prob. (31 spline Ford 8.8 with disk breaks)

This is why I have decided on doing a Dodge engine swap. Oh... it's also easy to make smog legal because they are both DC products.

So you would pick the 4.7L first... is it that much better than the "older" designs?

Does anyone know if it's lighter?

Thanks

I think the torque of the 5.9 would be fun in that application, but I don't know how hard the swap would be. I have seen many a jeep with a 350 SBC in it though, so that can't be too hard. A guy here at the office has a 94 that he put a LT1 in, pretty sweet but he flipped it.

Looking at the 4.7, it'd be a killer swap motor because everything but the O2 sensors are on the top and it's reletively short. Meaning it'd fit in smallish drive bays. The only question is the support wiring. (ie: dashboard stuff,ABS, and the throttle pedal...)

hi,

I think the 4.7L should be any easy swap as far as the wiering goes... Jeep uses that engine in the Grand Cherokee.

I've been looking at lunch today... it looks like the 4.7 is a little lighter and the power is only slightly less than the 5.2.

Thanks for the input... Anyone else???

I'm glad I ran into this message. I am doing a 4.7L engine swap into a 98 TJ SE that has a 2.5L with manual tranny. Have most of the parts and look to start work in a few weeks. I am using the 45RFE tranny. I will probably keep the np231 and install a SYE and Tom Wood drive shaft (http://www.4xshaft.com). I spoke Mr. Wood who said he might be able to modify the Dakota np242D to fit which would be great as I wouldn't need to buy a new input gear for the 231.

Here is a list of parts that I have purchased so far:

-4.7L V-8 with wiring harness, computer and all accessories from 2000 Dodge Dakota (also emissions and y-pipe)
-45RFE Auto tranny with harness and computer from same truck
-np242 transfer case from same truck
-Shifter assy from a 99TJ. Will work with the 45RFE tranny.
- Instrument cluster and Instrument wiring harness from a 2000 Dakota
-3" CATCO Catalytic Converter
-Universal fit aluminun "Be Cool" Radiator, fan, wiring harness and mounting hardware
-Flex-a-lite Transmission Cooler
-Engines mount new from Jeep for a Grand cherokee. I will modify these to fit the TJ (see burnsville Offroad TJ Project http://www.burnsvilleoffroad.com/00_12.html

Still need to purchase Dynomax exhaust system, drive shafts, throttle pendle assy, and ?

There is going to be some welding involved and some extra metal work.

I am doing a journal and posting on a web site when complete.

I hope this helps you a little.

I think a Jeep site would be more informative. If it's been done I'm sure you will find it there.

I haven't been watching this email address for some time. I successfully completed a 4.7L implant into a 2000 TJ. Very good engine. Wiring is a bear in that there are not conversion kits out there. However with some good research (and the factory manuals) you can wire directly fooling all the computers. Good luck.

Fellow Jeep Lover,

If you check out hotwireauto.com they should help you with the electrical harness aspect of this rebuild.
