Subject: 68mm or 69mm?

I asked this before but didn't really get any good answers. I'm pretty new to this whole engine modding stuff so I could use some expert advice. I have an 02' auto 4.7 dak. I'm trying to only do modifications proven to work. Anyways, so far all I have is the H.O. cams. Generally, a 68mm fastman is recommended as anything larger can hurt the low end. My concern is that going from a 68mm stock to a modified 68mm fastman, although beneficial, will not much of a difference as to justify the cost (I have a very tight budget). To make a long story short, if I go with a 69mm fastman, while keeping the exhaust stock and having the H.o. cams improving the torque, will I still lose low end or will the 69mm simply provide more power throughout the rpm band?

Save your money pal . The stock 68 mm TB is more than ok.. You need to step up to a cat back exhaust, like Flowmaster 50 series muffler, 180 T stat, and a Airaid cold air intake. The mods listed above I have on my 02 4x4 4.7 quad cab, and I have the Jet stage II module also. I like the combo works very well, Now since I get the air in and out I can step up to the 72 mm TB and really get more kick. The 70 mm wont do much.

Ian, you will notice a difference with a fastman 68mm, it's much smoother without the 'torque-step' notch (due to this notch, the stock TB isn't a TRUE 68mm but closer to a 65mm) and will pull in more air than the stock 68mm. Also, if your'e going for torque and low rpm power, then focus on getting more air in before you move onto the exhaust. The 68mm fastman will flow as much air as you'll need... and yes, the 70mm is a BIG difference from the 68 in terms of flow numbers, but without serious mods you'll never need the extra air that a 70mm or 72mm will provide... also, make sure that if you do replace the TB to get a better intake, take a look at NitrousSteve's intake, it's pretty sweet, or just build yourself one... sorry for the long post!

I said expert advice, not this bunk. The airaid (for the 4.7 at least) has proven to be worthless and I have heard nothing but terrible results from the jet chips. Anyone else?

Ian,

Great comeback, that's exactly what I was thinking after reading their posts!

Regarding 'darcy's post,

Save your greenbacks, and get a dremel tool ( I borrowed a friends!), but a few grinder bits and a few #60 wheels, and port your own, and take of the whole step in the stock TB, make it a true 68.

That's exactly what I did, it's feed by a nice, slightly larger, homebrew 'true cold air' intake. It's been described in another post.

I have the same attitude as you. LOL-jet sate!

I"m going to do the HO intake soon, Objectively, it DOESN'T hurt your low end, and gives more at the higher r's, so every now and then, it'll be nice, as I don't even take over 3500 very often!

hmmm... Todd, not sure why you think that my post was bunk... we both seem to have given him the same answer: stay with a ported 68mm. I agree with you on doing it yourself with a dremel though, that's what I'll be doing this summer, but he had said that he wanted a Fastman... We also both told him to build his own cold air intake instead of buying a piece of junk like the Airaid... also I agree that the JET chip is a complete waste of money and that the HO intake is a good investment... He asked a question and I gave him a good, informed answer. Why you think it was bunk, I have no idea.

Get a good single exhaust (larger diameter), or a dual/true dual exhaust, HO Cams, HO Intake, port your own or buy a Fastman 68-70mm TB, and at least relocate you IAT sensor (or make the IAT adjuster). Then either go with a S/C or turbo setup, or stay N/A and get the KB Opt. II. Even if you have a 45RFE auto, your truck will scream. The HO Cams, Intake, larger/ported TB and using good copper plugs really helped me out with both power and fuel mileage.

Darcy...We must have posted that at the same time, I was only referring to kevster's post not yours. Everyone, thanks for the GOOD advice. When I come up on some money I think I'll go for it and stick with the 68mm. I'm gonna wait a bit for the "Kool Shot" their prototyping at 360 airintakez, supposed to make as good or better power than their other design without all the noise (I'm going for the sleeper effect, I got a quad with a snugtop, would love to see the little ricer's face when I smoke um). Once again, thanks for the input guys.

Darcy,

Sorry you misunderstood my post. I never used the word 'bunk', and didn't say your post had any problem. I was expanding on your post, regarding the 'step', and getting a true 68mm TB out of an 01 stock 68mm TB.

I wasn't knocking anything you said. I was also argreeing with Ian's posts about mods that are NOT dyno proven, which, within monetary limits, is all I"ve done to my 4.7 also.

Todd, no worries, looking at your post now I see how you were just expanding on mine... it was just the first line, "Great comeback, that's exactly what I was thinking after reading their posts!" that kinda put me off... but I can see where you're coming from now! So no worries!
