My buddy has a 97 Ram 2500 4x4 with the 360. It has a noticeable miss and stumbles on occasion. It has brand new wires, plugs, rotor, and cap. Does anyone have any ideas/ suggestions as to what it might be, and how to fix it? Thanks in advance.

Make sure the distributor is in sync. You need a scan tool but you could probably very slightly turn it both directions to see if you could sync it up. Mine had a miss/ stumble and we finally hooked up a scanner and found the distributor was out of sync it had slightly moved when the shop was doing some other work on the engine. Mark the distributor at it's base before you turn it so you can get it back if need be. Again best to hook up a scan tool and sync it up only takes a minute. That's my guess anyway.

sync it?

You mean 'time' the engine?

Could be a dirty Throttle body, and the sensors in the TB also.

no not time the engine. The ditrubutor is capable of firing without the post/rotor lining up, syncing the distributor lines up the rotor to the cap posts so when it fires the plugs get the strongest spark possible. This is differnt then timing as timing is related to piston top dead center. you could have the correct timing as far as related to tdc. however the rotor could be 5-10 or even 20 degrees from the post when the spark is discharged, giving the plugs a week spark.

It could be a million different things:

1) Bad 02 sensor telling the truck to go leaner or richer than supposed to.

2) TPS has a dead spot and telling the truck it's at idle when it's cruising.

3) Sticky speedo cable telling the truck it's jumping from one speed to another locking and unlocking the converter giving the missing feeling.

4) There is a TSB for rerouting the coil and ignition wires to prevent induction. Check out www.dodgeram.org and go to TSB's. There are several more. I am in the middle of troubleshooting the same type of problem. Think it's my O2 sensor.

The tb was removed and cleaned thoroughly, as well as the sensors. The truck had a "check engine" and the code says random misfire on all cylinders. Anyone else have any ideas. Could this really be the converter or 02 sensors? We would change the sensors first if anyone thought this could be it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There is a TSB on Dodgeram.org for the ignition wires needing rerouted. Here is the link http://dodgeram.info/tsb/1998/18-48-98.htm. You might want to check that out before you change the sensor. To ops ck the sensor go to http://dodgeram.org/tech/gas/Trouble/O2_sensor.htm . But, I would try the TSB first. Hope that helps.

I work for a Dodge dealership. We have ran into various reasons for this complaint. Other than the solutions already discussed, other problems have been bad injectors(you can use a labscope on them but the easiest way is to use a stethescope and listen for them closing well, it is easy to tell the difference between bad and good), another problem is intake plenum and pan gaskets. To test the intake gaskets simply spray mopar parts clean or equivalent around the base of the intake, if a noticable rpm change is noted it is leaking, to test the plenum pan gasket disconnect both ports at the rear of the rocker covers and seal one and check the other for vacuum/pressure. The system is ok if there is pressure but the plenum gasket is leaking if there is a vacuum noticed. Hope i was of help.

I just picked the truck up this morning, and know a little more about it. It runs very rough, is bucking/ surging, it kind of lunges forward when idling at a red light, is missing terribly, and backfires on occasion. The backfire is not very often. Anymore ideas? Thanks again.

I have a 98 ram 1500 with the 360. It runs good until I stop at
stop lights. When I take off, it stumbles and back fires through
the carb. I have to shut it off and restart it. It will run good until
the next stop light. Advance auto said the code was for o2
sensor bank 1 and torque converter sensor (they had no idea
what this was). Before I buy an o2 sensor I wanted to get an
opinion on whether or not this could be the real problem.
