Has anyone got a 2003 QC with the "next generation" 4.7l engine? According to the dealer window stickers and the salesperson, the gas mileage is supposed to be the same for the 3.9 as the 4.7l. I would like to know if anyone has a 2003 and knows if this is true. You can't always believe those window stickers or the dealers.

I do, and it wouldn't suprise me if it was true. DODGE=SHIOT GAS MILAGE

but if you are thinking about buying one GET THE 4.7
my friend has the 3.9 and the times I have driven it, it was nice, but it just wasn't the same,

no matter what you will be buying a lot of gas, especially if you are as short fused as me and need to get places fast. But with the 4.7 you WILL be getting there faster, not just floring your dak and wasting so much gas.

it's a fun engine to work on, fairly new design so not many people know a lot about them. I know nothing about them that I didn't learn on this webpage.(thanx ya'll) But so far, nothing I have done was hard, just a PITA.

once you go 8, 2-4-6 you'll hate :)

COME TO THE DARKSIDE!!! BUY THE 8!!!

Thanks for the info. I'm steering towards the 4.7l. Especially if the gas mileage is the same as the 3.9l. I would rather have the power of the v8 anyday. But I drive 90 miles a day, so the gas mileage is a big issue. They are showing both the 3.9l and the 4.7l at 20 mpg highway. So if i can believe the window stickers I will go with the 4.7l. More bang for the buck! Thanks again for the heads up though.

This is just my opinion, but I'd go with the 4.7. I've got a '02 QC and I LOVE IT. If you're getting a 4x4, most definitly go with the 4.7. I don't think the 3.9 has the umph to turn all 4 wheels to my liking. I didn't get the 4.7L to go zooming around fast in and racing people light to light, but I find myself racing more and more people off of the line with it. :D And why not go with the bigger engine if they get the same gas mileage? It's a no brainer. But like I said, it's just my opinion - go with the 4.7!

Steve

I appreciate your guys opinions. I mean who knows better about these trucks than people who own them and drive them. (Not the people who just sell them!) My hesitation comes from my disbelief that the 4.7 v8 could possibly get as good mpg as the 3.9 v6 with 2 less cylinders. It is a no brainer if the mpg was the same, you'd be crazy not too! But I am having a tough time finding real #'s on the mpg. I realize everyone's mpg is going to vary also. I'm hoping because my drive is 90% highway, i could get that 20+mpg! I know one can dream can't he? Well anyway, thanks again guys for the input, go mopar! V8 power!

I have an 02 quad as well.
If mileage is your concern then get a toneau cover for the bed. once up to speed the 4.7 is very efficient. If you go easy on the RMP's and reduce the drag on the backside your mileage will be fine.

I have read nothing but distaste for the 6 cyl quad combo.

Do yourself a favor and get the 4.7 like we did.
BTW I have a led food and love the power, I still get 13 around town and 20 on the free way. More power and better mileage than my old chey 350.

A Quad and a 3.9? Hello?...tap, tap, tap, Hello...anyone there?

And Steve-o, nice denial and rationalization man, really. Have you ever had 6 people in yours,(it's legal, in the cab you know)? Ever Haul ANYTHING, TOW ANYTHING? If so, then the v6 will get WORSE mpg than the 4.7.

Scott,

Wake up man, don't even THINK about that sorry old, poorly designed 3.9!
And get the 5speed also, Trailer towing/HD service group, SLT interior, etc.

And ORDER the DAK, don't settle for what some cigarette smoking, coked salesperson is going to push on you. Get everything, EVERY option, the way you want it! Hell, if YOU really want a v6-get that too.

It took guts to even post a question like that, way to go man!

Go with the 4.7, and enjoy! And yes, it gets better MPG in the real world, not just even on estimates! That 6 in a QC is a sorry ......

01, QC, 4.7, 5spd, LSD, HO cams, Trailer Towing, HD, tire and handling pack, Leer shell, ported TB, NO visous fan/clutch, homebrew tru cold air air -intake with K&N, SLT interior, Infinity sound, 2 tone paint, fender flares, tire and handling pack, etc. soon to get HO intake and gut third cat!

I also have an 02 QC - 4.7 auto with 3.55 gears. If you drive the speed limit on the interstate, you can get right at 20 mpg with 3.55 gears. Unless of course you live in Montana!

If you get the 5-speed, your mileage would be even better.

Personally, I've never averaged more than 18.5 mpg on the highway. 70 mph just isn't my style!

Thanks everyone for the input. I'm gonna go with the 4.7 raw power. When i test drove it, i was totally blown away. I'm gonna love that v8 sound and feel! And I can do aftermarket addons to try and get the mpg a little more acceptable. Especially since gas prices look like they are gonna keep going up, (but that is a whole other discussion board!). Thanks again.

Texas Todd..where are you coming from man?

..."And Steve-o, nice denial and rationalization man, really. Have you ever had 6 people in yours,(it's legal, in the cab you know)? Ever Haul ANYTHING, TOW ANYTHING? If so, then the v6 will get WORSE mpg than the 4.7."

Dude, chill bro. I was telling him to get the 4.7. He was the one that said they got the same mpg. I have no clue as to what the 3.9 gets per gallon. And as a matter of fact yes I have towed something with my 4.7...It was a boat along with the 3 other people I had in the cab plus all the gear in the bed. So I don't see how you think I'm in denial.

I was just going off of what he said. He said
..."According to the dealer window stickers and the salesperson, the gas mileage is supposed to be the same for the 3.9 as the 4.7l"... I wasn't argueing about the gas mileage.

Man, I'm glad I didn't run into any a$$holes like you when I was in Texas. Just try to turn your knobs down a bit and stop trashing everyone's posts and try to help the guy out that is posting the original question. We're all here to help and share with each other, not run each other down.

Hey Scott.

I own both a Dakota with a V6 and now a Dakota with a 4.7 V8 4x4(5 speed auto) and there both strong pulling engines (V6 is a '93) I also got a dual exaust system and that does help out on fuel. But I have noticed that my new Dakota does get 1.5 MPG better than my older 2x4 V6 Dakota.

Also if you want a truck that just for crusing around town with some not so bad apealing looks. Check out the Chevy Colorodo. Its a totaly new redesign pick up that GM is comming out with ( including the GMC Canyon). I here that the new powertrains will get up to 24 MPG. Comes in either a I4 or a 3.5L I5. Of course they don't produce all that much tourqe. But you don't need a lot if you going haul stuff in it.
