Subject: 92 Engine Problem
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 92 Dakota(5.2 v8 - 88000 actual miles). About 2 times a week while driving the RPM gauge goes to 0 and there is no response from the accelerate. The engine does not stop until the truck comes to a complete stop. I can restart the truck with no problem. My mechanic said no codes are stored and Dodge has no bulletin about the problem. This problem is getting expensive. Any help would be appreciated.

I vjust did a big tuneup to try to cure the same exact problem in mine....92 V8........

First tried the Throttle Position Sensor...THAT actually seemed to egt rid of the dead stall you describe....but I was left wioth an intermittant lumpy/rough misfire...

Cap, rotor, wires, plugs, camshaft position sensor, crank position sensor have been changed since....not sure yet if problme is still tehre...wetaher has been too crappy to take my baby out of the garage...but where I used to get the problem on first startup, I dont seem to get it....but we shall see....

Next time your truck stalls out completely, check the fuel pressure in the fuel rail by pressing the schrader valve. Hopefully fuel will spray out. (WAtch your eyes.)

I had a similar problem and it was my fuel pump. It would work fine for a while and then cut out. Eventually I could not restart it.

The pump would pressurize the rails, I would drive and slowly bring the pressure down. When the pressure became too low, the engine would stall. When I then tried to restart the engine, the pump would pressureize it enough to get me rolling a few miles down the road and then stall again. If your pump is not working 100%, you will eventually drop below the required pressure.

Clean you throttle body, i had the same symtoms until i cleaned my throttle body. To take it off all you need to do is lift off your air cleaner housing and remove all the cables, then just take out the 4 bolts. The body should just pull straight up

the 92's dont have fuel rails as they don't use fuel injectors in the manifold. they have a "throttle body injection" which is a cross between a carborator and fuel injection.

That's incorrect....

My 92 Magnum V8 has individual injectors and a fuel rail....maybe they offered both, but mine definately is multiport injected...

I had a '92 5.2 that had similar problems with an occasional electronic "hickup". I replaced the throttle body kicker and speed sensor at the tranny, besides the usual plugs/rotor/wires/injector cleaner route. Finally replaced the engine computer at 160K miles...end of problem.

I had this problem in my first vehicle, a '92 Dakota CC 4x4. It was the six-cylinder but the symptoms were identical. I would crank it and drive for a while with no problems, but after a while I would let off the gas to prepare to stop or something and the tach would drop to zero or close to it. As soon as the truck completly stopped, the engine died. I fought with this thinking it was bad fuel, for several months. One night my friend Zack and I are in the middle of the state forest on forestry roads off-roading. We stop for about five minutes to take a break, get back in and crank the truck. I put it in drive, move four feet and it dies. Will NOT restart. I accidentally left the key in the run position, which left the pump on. After we pushed it for a mile or so, I got pissed and hit the starter. It cranks, Zack and I jump in and I floor it. We make it almost to town and it dies for good. When we finally got it to the Dodge dealer, it was the fuel-pump. Replaced it and the truck ran better than it had in months.

Yeah, i have a 92 dodge dakota, ex-cab, 4x4, mag V8 318 5.2 liter engin and i have the exactly the same problem i am driving around and i will let of the gas for a bit to coast or to brake and my tac will drop to 0 or just above it and my engin will stall. But i see it drop or feel it i can push on the gas a little bit and it shoots back up for a awhile and then it will drop back down and ii will eventually stall. So i hope i have the same prob with the fuel pump so i can fix it.

Adam: vibration sounds just like mine (92,2wd,5.2,auto,206000 mi.)as U-joints got worse the vibration speed moved lower. I also had trouble with the fuel pump relay under the hood years ago, relay making poor contact where it plugged into the block.
