Subject: RC 4.7 vs RC R/T?
IP: Logged

Message:
Wasup all, I have a friend that drives a '00 RC R/T and he is one cocky guy. He has a catback exhaust and drop in K&N filter. Everytime I try to talk to him about our trucks the topic always seems to lead to which one is faster. Though I havent raced him on the street yet, I cant help but wonder which would be the first to trip the beam at the end of the 1/4. Since I only have the 15x7 rims and 215/75R15 POS tires I cant hardly get a decent launch without baking the tires. My question is if I were to switch my rear tires for his two front r/t tires(G.Y. RSA's) at the track and be able to get decent traction on the launch, would I stand a good chance of beating him if I shift correctly. I dont want to hear "you'll never know till you try." I just want to hear your opinions about who you think would win. THANKS!

Keep in mind the added traction those bigger tires give will help but their added weight will hurt, and giving him even less rotational mass on his truck will just make him even faster. Better to go buy a set of drag radials for 15" rims and pick up an extra 2 rims at the junk yard. The weight of just 1 17" r/t wheel and tire is over 60#'s, i'm confident a change over to 15's all around and drag radials on the back would cut .4 secs off an R/T. I think you have the advantage in mods, (a catback may really help at this point), he has the advantage in gears. You better practice that shifting as it is much harder to drive the 5-speed to perfection compared to an R/T.

I have a 99 r/t and i have raced many 4.7 and 5.2 and the end result is the same. I smoked them all. The 5.2 was even a five speed and it still got blown away. so better do alot to the engine before you can compete with the R/T

With the 3.55 gears you have, he will win. ALso like hersbird mentioned, the extra weight from the R/T wheel will hurt you, and the decreased weight of your rear tires on his front end will only help him with the launch and trap speeds. You might be gaining traction, but you will be giving him a better launch, and less weight o push through the 1/4

Practice your launch, and shifting! You got a good package, the 3.55 might hurt a bit but only at the start. Get on it and fry up the tires make sure you get familiar with that feeling. When you launch keep 'em chirping, but not screaming-you might have to back off the gas a little. Have fun, you just might surprise yourself and that R/T.

ANd us R/T owners give the 4.7 respect because they can hang with us. At least in 4.7L 5speed, 3.92, lsd, RC form they can.

Few Q and one Answer
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi All:

I have tested the 4.7 with a 5 speed and its a wonderful combination. Little exhaust rumble when you tramp it for those few and far between smiles each day but quiet and smooth all other times. I have never had a truck before and this vehicle is the absolute most comfortable of all the vehilces we have tried (Escape, Explore Sport and Short Bed, Highlander)

The Answer: For those look for the 4.7/5 speed combination in a quad cab Etown Dodge in Elizabethtown, Pa mush have 20 quads with 25% of those being 4.7... 5 speeds

The questions i have are:

Q1. I liked the 3.92 rear in 2nd through 5th but first seems really too low for starting out. Do most owners simply start out in 2nd gear which I tried and it worked fine every time. I would consider the 3.55/whatever rear but i think the opposite would happen and now 5th would be too high and shifts to fourth on the gradual hills would be necessary.

Also i want to fit slightly taller and wider tires later on the stock rims which will bring the 3.92 effectively toward teh 3.55 and might ease the first gear issue a bit. Q = Given all this do you feel the 3.92 is the best for me

>>>>

Q2. While checking all the lines out here there is no mention to making the Dakota handle a bit better in the turns. Q = Has anyone done any work on this or know of anyone that has. I am not looking for sports car handling but cutting the acceptable lean a tad

>>>>

Q3. I want to carry my semi vintage CBX to Rallies every so often which is one reason to buy the Dakota vs the Durango....butttt I am wondering about the various bed covers avail and the convenience/inconvenience of each given this use. I saw a roll top desk type approach to a cover using plastic panels at a local ford dealer ...has anyone seen these.

>>>>

Q4. What are the top 3 mini/econo proven changes one can do to pick up a few extra hp and what effects are there of each on the computer

>>>>

Q5. What about aftermarket sun roof or two smaller ones on each side of the trip computer assy

Bout it and thanks to everyone for your time and consideration

I was all ready to get a R/T until I discovered all the issues with the low tow rating. So, I got a 4.7L, 5 speed, 3.92LS because I need to tow more than what the R/T can. I already have a car ('98 Neon R/T) and was in the need for a truck. Always had a Mopar, and the Dakota was reasonably priced. Got a great deal through Chrysler Military Sales to boot. Kind of cool to have a V-8 quick truck in Korea where not much will keep up to it. (Land of Kia, Hyundia and Daewoo. Ha ha ha)

Hey Mike. No problem starting in second. The dealer that ordered my truck for me sugested starting in 2nd gear. I only usually start in 1st if I know a race is on or if I am up hill.

My truck I will hold 5th no problem up long steep straight hills but there is no acceleration.

5th gear is for economy anyways not speed so who cares about acclerating in 5th up hill. If I want speed I can hit the speed limiter in 4th anyways @117MPH even with 3.92's

No idea what you woudl run in te 1/4. I would make a guess at high 15s. The Plus just means you get more standard options on your truck. A "luxury" version of the Sport.

the 2001 SLT came with cruise and tilt steering.

"Smiles few and far between" ? What does that mean? My 4.7 5spd is very quick and I smile every time I start it up and turn it off. I love this truck. I would rather die than drive an automatic, I don't care if it was an "8.9" or whatever .9. You RT guys can do what you will, but if it doesn't have me shifting gears, I wouldn't even consider buying it. I can spin em in 3rd piece of cake, even with the 255's. Let me see an RT do that without water involved. On My old car list no one ever arqued about the differences between each others rides. They only commented on racing or pacing up against a different type of car. We all have Dakotas, so why we aren't only considering matching up to different trucks beats me. It probably has to do with the RT vs X Dakota. But hey if you like automatics, so your wife can drive them, then so be it.

If Dodge woudl have offered the 5-speed with the R/T, do you really think that we woudl all still hve the auto?? I would love to have a 5-speed, but Dodge woudln't give it to me. And even though the 4.7 with a 5-speed is just as quick as the R/T, I would rather drive the R/T for the looks and the performance upgrade options I have.

Basically the R/T is an inch lower with lower profile tires, which makes it like a lot sportier. 17" rims make the fender gap even smaller and helps handling. Plus all of the chrome and gray on my SLT would be painted body color, which I am going to do anyway. Looks can be changed and so can ride height, tires etc. But try swapping trannies and adding pedals and all and you have one pain on your hands. My point is that I will only drive a manual, no matter what. I would not have chosen the R/T simply for that reason. But I have plenty of fun in my 4.7, even though I have only driven it 400 miles. Trust me the smiles have just begun.

Don't forget those 5.2. They may not come out of the hole as hard but when they start reving hold on. I had a 97 rc 5.2 that ran 15.2 right off the lot with a K&N. Faster than most R/T's off the lot.

I'd agree the 5.2/5-speed is really the best place to start if you were looking to build a 1/4 mile performer. The 5.2 has all the same mods the 5.9 has (and could even be made into a 5.9 or even a 400+ stroker. Then you don't have the handicap of the automatic. Just good luck in keeping the tramission, and axles in one peice with mods and slicks or sticky tires. You'll end up having to upgrade those parts as well, but with the money saved in the first place on buying a 99 compared to new you'd be in good shape.

well, i got my question answered last night. We were at a stoplight and when the light turned green we went at it. I lost a little traction at the start in 1st gear but soon my tires bit and we were off. we raced to 70 then had to slow for upcoming traffic. By then my front bumper was at his rear wheels. Im sure i could have took him if i hadnt spinned at takeoff, but still there was very little difference in the length he won by. I feel with a little better driving on my part i wont have to worry about loosing to him again. No worrys though, it was fun.
