Subject: 4.7L fan and T-Stat
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2000 Dakota with the 4.7. Can anyone tell me where I can get a 180 degree T-Stat? I've all over and I'm told a T-Stat for the 4.7L is not listed! On removing the fan, How do you hold the pulley. Mine does not have bolts to use a prybar on and does not have holes to wedge a screw driver in. Please help. Thanks

Stant 180 T stat# 65358 this is the premium stainless, cost is 9-10.00. The pulley has small holes on edge you look hard enough you will see them, use lrg crescent wrench, move nut counterclockwise, hold screwdriver in hole and give a good whack or use some muscle, nut will crack loose. USE CARE NOT TO DAMAGE PULLEY OR YOU ARE FU@#ed.

Autozone carries the Robertshaw thermostat for $7. Excellent quality. Part number is GT755-180 and can be found on the shelf without having to ask the idiots behind the counter. You will need to file a small notch in it to match your factory stat and make sure the gasket fits into the notch correctly and that the gasket then goes into the stat housing correctly (uses a tab on the gasket to fit into notch in the housing).

I removed the belt and used one of the large craftsman strap wrenches to hold the pulley as i used brute force on a 12" crescent to break it loose.. just rested the strap wrench on the tensioner pulley...

Nothing else would work on mine, that that is 2.5 years and 70k miles after initial installation...

cuda, cuda, settle down,

I was impressed that he was actually taking the fan off, instead of asking if it was possible, will the pulley fall off, do I need another electric, I din't get a gasket with my t-stat, etc., etc.

One guy actually bothered taking the fan off the clutch, and leaving the rotating mass of the clutch in place, thinking the pulley would just fly right off!

and I think Joey may have meant the fact that where and how to get that stat regarding the search.

I probalby responded a dozen times, that if you ask for it for that application, they will always tell you it doesn't exist!

Chris, you couldn't put a phillips screwdriver thru the holes in the pulley? Oh well, what you did worked, and we both know, there's more than 1 way to skin a cat!

Another part number is the Stant #45358. Same T-stat, just different package.
I used a small 10" pipe wrench and cheater bar to unscrew my fan.
Used the search function and found all the info I could ever need.

Did you put it in backwards? I'm not joking, people do that often..

Depending on where you are located, it might be too hot to take your clutch fan off.

I thought the 4.7 was an o-ring, not a gasket??

Yes, put the fan back on, and check it. I drive my truck all the time here in Houston (we're pretty hot as well..) and the only time the temp rises is in a Whataburger drive-thru (SLOWEST "FAST FOOD" CHAIN EVAR!!!!) or in traffic, and even then at the 210 mark the stock electric fan turns on and all is well.

How did you mix the coolant? Just wondering.. and the T-stat going back in backwards is pretty easy to do on accident, especially if you perhaps removed it from the top, and laid UNDER the truck to put the new one in...
