Subject: low idle 4.7 solved
IP: Logged

Message:
About 6 months ago I installed a new set of white faced gauges. When installing them i had got a few of the needles a little off including the tac (had set around 450 at idle). Anyway i always have had low stumlbling idle. Last week i decided to take apart the dash and reset needles. After resetting tac to around 600 idle,I found that the truck responded to new setting and has had perfect 600-650 idle ever since with no stumbling. I seemed to may accidentally found a cure and a manual adjustment for idle. All you have to do is take needle off and set idle where you want it ,you must have truck running to do this.

does thre rev-limiter, or shift points, seem any different or are these still the same. I just fint it hard to belive that this would change the idle RPM of the engine.

Wow, hold the phone here!

You mean I CAN wrap 10 grand, on my engine, by just changing the needle while it's running?

Seriously, you have the first automobile-truck, known to mankind the can read the faceplate on a gauge and say, ops, the idle's a little low, better compensate!

All you did take the needle off, and move it from 450 to 600 rpms, and now it idles at 600 rpms?

Imagine that!

I always know this engine was capable of 10 grand rpms, I just never knew how easy it would be to get it there!

I was just telling everyone what happened in my situation. The post i put up was true. If you haven't tried it then how will you ever know if it works. I have tried it and it did work on my truck, like i said it was kind of an accident on how i came accross it. point is don't knock it till you try it!!!!

I have known this for some time. But if you do set your idle, be careful. I was wanting my idle to be at 0, instead of 2200 on my trip to Florida to save some gas. Well, I set the idle a good bit under 0, so at 2200 it would be just around where I wanted it. To make a long story short, it was a nightmare to drive. The engine read my setting as -1700rpms while idling, thus making my engine run backwards. Instead of starting in D, I had to start in R until the rpm's made it up past 0, and then shift into D really fast. It was horrible! Once I got going, it was fine. I saved 45 gallons of fuel on that trip, so it was definitely worth it.

Joe,

I just read that again, and AGAIN I'm ROTFLMAO!

devastated dak,

All you did was move the needle, how the *%^*^ could that actually change anything?

So, like you said, it idled at 450 on the tach, you started the truck, (stay with me here), and you took the needle off and put it back where it showed 600, right? And now it idles at 600! My god Einstein, I think you may have something here!

Wait a minute, do you have a Tornado TB spacer also? LOL

Joe, do you Jack? I knew him once, then he moved away, and changed, and now, I don't know Jack anymore!

8^D

Have a good day!

I tell you what, give people some helpful info, and look what happens!! I know it seems like a crazy idea, but none of you have tried it.You should give it try before judging. Also when doing this ,i was not trying to bump up the idle only adjusting the needles and the idle picked up and has been up ever since. No more shiity idle!!Again I do not know why this worked but it did.

Todd,

No, I'm just an average Joe, I don't know Jack.

Another secret mod that may interest you is the fill up mod. With gas prices being what they are now, I should be selling this mod... but being the nice guy I am, I'll just let you all in on it. If you remove the plastic that covers your gauges, you can not only adjust your idle, but also fill your fuel tank back up, FOR FREE!!! Just move the needle from E to F, and there you go, free gas. I'm sure the government will try to tax us somehow if they find out about this mod. Also, if you have an older car, it works with oil pressure too.

I've found that when I put less gas in my truck, the fill-up is less expensive. I pay less at the pump by just letting of the pump trigger sooner. That leaves me more money for things like custom tachometer needles!

Pretty schweet, don't you think?

Alex,

I usually drive around to all the pumps and squeeze the gas nozzle without it actually being on, getting the extra drippings. After 14 gas stations, I have about 1/4 of a tank.

Another cool mod is to stick your finger in the change return of vending machines, allowing the occasional free $0.05 to go towards a $6 burger.

devastatdak02,

This kicks azz! Now I won't have to get a 2500 stall converter!

What you did to your dash has nothing to do with your idle. It was just a fluke. Take the whole damn dash out and throw it away and it will not effect your idle.

It's gotta be a conspiracy!! Devastatdak02, I gotta say it's just a coincidence that messin with that needle fixed your idle, but if it worked for you, more power to you. I don't even have idle problems. I just thought this was the funniest damn post EVER on this board, especially when I found out you were serious! No hard feelings man, but WOW!

Guys, and Gals,

You're killing me. I'm laughing so hard now at work, co-workers are coming in my office from theirs, as if something is wrong with me.

devi, how old are you? Not that age has anything to do with this, and I've gotten such pleasure out of this thread since it started, (the one on the rumors is pretty damn funny too) that this site rules all!

OK, so not only did the rpms go up to where you moved the needle, but it's smoother too? You sure? Just as you were moving that needle on your tach, did you know I was filling my cup at the cold water dispenser? How do you know that didn't cause it to happen, have you tried it?

Get real, I'm not even going to try it b/c first of all, my truck idles fine. Second of all, if it idles rough, I'm not going to go move my tach needle to fix it. I'll try the easy things first, like getting another drink of water-it fixed yours didn't it?

Ok...this must kinda be like ricer math
If my exhaust says it adds 10 hp and my "cold air" intake says it adds 15 then that is 25 hp just because it says so....just like your truck now idles at 600 cuz you made it say so...
or maybe it is like my gas mileage...when I do the numbers it is like 17 mpg but my overhead console says closer to 20. hell I like that number better so I'm just gonna say my truck gets 20 mpg now cuz something says so.

for the record i am 25, and have a solid background in mechanics. I know it is funny and maybe downright stupid for something like this to work. I never thought that it would ever ever fix the low choppy idle and never expected it to.Just one of those things that worked. since the change idle has been up,not just the needle. I did not want to post this info because it does sound very ridiclous but it worked and maybe it will help someone else. I still would like someone to give it a try and see if works for them..anybody interested????

There is no way moving a needle had any effect what so ever on how your engine idles. it was pure coincidence. I've pulled my instrument cluster completely out of my truck and it started and idled just fine, so how can just moving a needle effect it any??

All you 5-speed guys, maybe if you turn your shifter knobs upside down you can get 5 reverse gears and one forward gear.
