Subject: R/T or 4.7 sport club cab?

Message:
Hey guys I already decided not to get the V6 dakota. However now I'm struggling if I should get the R/T or just a Sport 4.7L V8. Both 2003. I do not really care about tow capacity. However I will be putting a lot of performance parts and other modifications in order to make it good for show rooms. I'm pretty sure if I get the 4.7 I will be getting an automatic so that is not an issue. If you guys could give me some advice and opinions that be great thanks!

If u dont care about gas mileage, get the 5.9. lots more torque and lots more performance parts available. Also, its a more reliable powerplant, the 4.7 has been having many more problems and if u look at consumers reports, the reliabilty of the dakota has gone down from 2000 on and that is when the 4.7 was introduced. thats just my 2 cents. by the way i got a 5.9 reg cab r/t and love it. very powerful and sounds great too.

Like Joey said, if you plan to mod the truck for shows ans performance, you will have a lot kmore options with the 5.9 in the R/T. Also, the R/T's come standard now with the Stampede body kit from the factory.

I don't want to bring the 4.7/5.9 battle back up, but....

The 4.7 a problem motor? I have 2 a 2000 Dakota, and a 2002 Durango. My grandfather has a 2001 Dakota as well as a cousin with a 01 QC... We have plenty in the family.

None of us have had anything more than a clock-spring go bad in the air-bag sensor. (recall item)

The aftermarket is evolving...But true...the 5.9's do have more to choose from. Now.

I would ask myself a serious question...GAS MILEAGE??? Gas is fixing to get pretty expensive. $2+ per gallon. Just something to think about. I get 20+ MPG in the Dakota, and 17-18MPG in the Durango.

Nothing wrong in my opinion of the 5.9 cept for the mileage. Low-end torque is good, and the motor is tried and true (it's as old as Moses)

Just trying to give you a 4.7 view.

Good luck, and enjoy your truck, with whatever you end up with.

Gas mileage depends on alot on gear choice as well. If you get the 4.7 with the 3.92 gears, it doesn't get much better gas milage than a R/T. I average between 15-16 mpg in my '00 R/T and have gotten a best of 18mpg in my '99 R/T(RIP)

I just traded my 99' R/T CC for a 00' 4X4 CC 4.7 5-speed. So far my gas mileage on the 00' has been the same as the R/T as far as city/back road drivin. I haven't taken any highway trips yet, but I am expecting to get a little better out of the 4.7.

As far as performance, both being stock, my R/T felt quicker. If you gonna get a CC 4.7 auto vs. a CC R/T, same gears, the R/T will take it out, assuming stock vs. stock. I know this because my friend had a 02 4.7 CC auto and my R/T would take it in any race, from a dead stop, 10 mph roll and a 55-100 highway dash. So will my 4.7 because it's a 5-speed.

As for modifications, The R/T wins there also.

I do think that the 4.7 is a great motor. The thing I like the most about my new truck is the 5-speed.

This is coming from someone who has owned both, good luck on your decision.

O, and if wasn't for this nasty PA weather I would still have my R/T.

Joey,

Reliability probs with the 4.7? Like the belly pan gasket on a 5.9? The 4.7 IS a VERY reliable engine!

Rob, as noted, you DID change to a 4x4, theres a few MPG's right there.

Chris,

I'm sure you'll do the research, and make the best decision for YOU, I did for ME.

I opted for the QC,4.7, 5spd, etc, etc,

You'll do what's right for YOU.

It's a 2WD 3:55 gear (2002)

SXT not many frills. No third seat, No rear air, etc....

Get 425-445 miles to 25 gallons of gas.

300ft above sea level. K&N air filter only mod, and just recently, a ported 68MM TB.

Thanks guys for the advice and tips. I went out today to test drive a 2003 Dodge Dakota Club Cab R/T 5.9 and also a sport 4.7. I found that the R/T gets off quicker and I can feel the more power it has also. I also consulted my mechanic that will be helping me with the mods and the R/T leaves me with more options. All though gas mileage might be a pain but what the hell if I wanted good gas mileage I wouldn't be getting a truck. I'll keep u guys posted on the R/T once I buy it

I am having an argument with my neighbor, he just bought a 00 Durango Sport with the 4.7ltr, he says this is the 318 cu.in. Iunderstood that the 5.2 was the 318 and the 5.9 was the 360, and that the new 4.7 was just a new motor in the lineup. Please tell me this is right, I only have $10 riding on this but he is being so smug I need the help. PLease e-mail me @ aaonj3944@hotmail.com with the right info please.

Blue Bullet,

The 4.7 is a 287ci.

Yes, they used to make a 273.

the 4.7 is not the 273, and the 4.7 is on of the more current engines.

4.7L is a 287 ci. Completely new engine. About the only thing it shares with the 5.2 and 5.9L is the connecting rod length.
